collars fit around the dog's neck just as a
conventional collar, but they have a device that

extremely mild shock that does not hurt the dog
at all but simply diverts the dog's attention.
The buzz has been described by some as a means
of distracting and annoying the dog, much the
same as a buzzing fly would.

the dog from barking. Once the barking has
ceased while using the collar, which usually
takes several weeks, the collars do not have to
be worn everyday. They do have to be worn every

city ordinances, pet owners must take extreme

Correct Sheep Feed For A Healthy 2012 Lambing Season

Body conditioning scores are used in the

mid-period of pregnancy will be about 55% TDN
and 9.4% crude protein in the form of 3.3 pounds
of dry matter per day.

During the more important late gestation
period, knowing just how much feed should be put
forth for the ewe is dependent on the number of
fetuses being carried. Too little feed will
result in low birth weight and weak lambs that
are susceptible to stress and illnesses. They
are also slower in growth during the pre-weaning
phase. If the ewe is overfed, not only are the
lambs to big and cause lambing problems, they
also have a lower survival rate.

For the 170 pound ewe, the TDN requirement will
increase to 56-65% and crude protein will
increase to about 10%. The accepted rule of
thumb is three to six weeks prior to lambing,
each ewe should receive one pound of grain
supplement for each lamb they are carrying.

One critical time frame is two weeks prior to
lambing. The TDN for twins should increase 15%
and 30% for triplets. The crude protein should
increase 23% for twins and 45% for triplets.

The transabdominal scanning is able to detect
multiple births by days 51 through 75 and a very
effective tool that helps determine what each ewe
needs during the late gestation period which is
considered the last 4 to 6 weeks before lambing.

During the late gestation cycle, the ewe's
mammary development occurs. If the ewes are
underfed during this time, the quality and yield
of milk will be reduced.

Three weeks prior to lambing, the ewes should
be vaccinated for clostridium, dewormed and
tetanus shots given for healthier lambs.

The greatest period of nutritional demand on
ewes is during lactation. The amount of feed
given to the ewe is dependent on how many lambs
she is nursing, her size and condition, her age
and time of year the lambs are born are all
factors taken into consideration. Usually,
lactating ewes will be fed one pound of grain
for each lamb nursing off her. Sixty days after
lactation, the feed should be reduced to prevent
the ewe from becoming overly fat. Most ewes
though will lose weight during lactation. This
can be remedied with higher protein for the ewe.

During the weaning period, the grain should be
reduced a week or two before weaning the lambs.
Then, all grain should be removed and place the
ewe on a low quality grass hay or even straw.
This will cause the udders to dry up. Once
lactation has stopped, the ewes should be placed
on a regular maintenance of feed again.

Buy this food, you will not be disappointed! My dogs are in love with Canidae Maintenance Formula for All Life Stages, and so am I.

I certainly would say, conditionally, this is turning out to be a good food for my dog and would suggest it to others looking for a quality food. It's been about 2 months now on Canidae. It is supposed to arrive a week after the 17th, which means it will have taken 2 weeks to get my delivery. Not a big deal if you are waiting on something frivolous, but food for you pets should be delivered more quickly.

I found this dog food after doing research to help my dog's allergies (2 Goldens). My dog had terrible allergies and she has been on Canidae All Life Stages for about 5 weeks now.

I did some research and found Canidae, which only uses high-quality ingredients from the U.S.A. My dogs like it just as much as Iams and Science Diet and I feel great because they're eating healthier food.

I'm still not happy about this incident. I decided not to pursue it any longer, but I still feel people should know. You will notice a big difference in energy as well as skin and coat. A lot of senior dogs switch to the ALS formula and have more "zoomies" and more energy than on other lower quality diets.

But if you think about how people react to a healthy diet in the beginning it makes sense. It takes time for the taste buds to adjust and not want the artificial ingredients put into most of the food out there. In fact, my cat loves the new formula even more than the old. She's getting a little fat. I checked my bag of food and found nothing written as far as NEW FORMULA. I cooked them all boiled chicken and rice and the symptoms went away.

I adopted a rescue dog who had an allergy to corn. I checked every bag in local stores but all main fillers were corn.

No one, including myself, has been successful in getting any sort of satisfactory reply from Canidae when asked if they had changed formulas, ingredient suppliers, etc. I'm disappointed, Canidae was one of the few 'quality foods' that had not raised prices significantly over the past year and was still affordable for most dog owners. I ordered directly from Pet Food Direct before I saw the negative reviews here. So after delivery, I decided I would make the transition slowly. They clearly have a dangerous quality control problem. I tried many different types of dry food for my picky eater, a cavalier King Charles spaniel.

Training your dog to do various activities is an
important way to improve his or her overall
behavior. The real benefit of training your dog
to do tricks isn't that you can show him or her
off to your friends and family. The benefit lies
in the fact that the training process, and the
act of performing the trick later on, calms the
dog's mind and develops a more stable and
likable personality.

One of the first things that dog owners think
about when considering training their pet to do
tricks is teaching him or her to sit. Also, this
is one of the simplest commands for a dog to
learn. Please note that for older canines, dog
arthritis may be an issue and they perhaps
cannot sit as easily as they used to.

For this and all tricks, food will be used as
the primary reinforcement. Food is an extremely
important part of every dog's life. Secondly,
praise will be used along with physical petting
and affection.

First off, shop for small dog treats that are
easy to carry and your dog likes. Use treats
that do not crumble easily and can safely be
carried in a coat pocket. And of course,
determine that your dog really enjoys and
appreciates these treats.

In the first day, we will go through the
following routine three or four times throughout
the day. Have several of the treats in your hand
as you walk with your dog. If he hasn't learned
the benefits of sitting, he will probably stand
looking up at you and know when you have the
treat in your hand. Do not offer him a treat at
this point. If he's not aware you have the
treats in your hand you may allow him to smell
them. Now then, say "sit" one time in a very
firm tone. Of course your dog won't know what
you're talking about at this time, so give him a
couple of seconds and then say the word again
while simultaneously reaching down and pushing
firmly on his rear.

At this point, some dogs will strongly resist
while others will follow your hand's pressure
and sit down. Whatever it takes with your dog,
keep pushing until him or her finally sits. The
instant he is in the sitting position offer him
one treat and pet his ears.

Now then, walk several feet away forcing the dog
to follow you. Again, he will simply be looking
up at you while standing. Again you will offer
the command and give him a few seconds to follow
it, which he won't at this point. Then say the
command again while pushing his rear into a
sitting position. Again, offer the treat. Repeat
this one more time.

You'll want to repeat the above process several
times in the first day. Scatter this session
throughout the day at least several hours apart.
Praise the animal greatly after each session.

On the second day do exactly as you had the
first, except add one or two more sessions
during the day. Do not offer the dog treats
except during the sessions on any of these
training days. You'll find that it becomes
easier and easier to get the dog to sit. Many
dogs will actually perform the command on the
second day.

On the third day, you'll repeat the same exact
process as the second day and in almost all
cases by the end of the day the dog is sitting
on command.

It's very important to continue and follow-up
over the coming weeks and do this same sequence
of training on a regular basis. Although it does
not have to be done several times a day or even
every day, it is important that it's done three
or four times a week at least. It won't be long
until the dog will instantly follow the command
regardless of whether or not you have food in
your hand or not.

Deworming Your Dog

At some point in your dog's life they will have
worms. Whether it's as a puppy (which is most
common) or as an adult dog, worming treatment as
soon as you notice a problem is crucial to stop
further infestation and the development of other
illnesses. The common intestinal parasites that
we know are tape worm, round worm, hook worm and
whip worm. Heartworms are located in the heart's
blood vessels which lead to the lungs. Blood
tests will be needed to detect heartworms. Tape
worms and round worms can be diagnosed visually,
the others have to be determined through faecal
examination. It is important to do regular
de-worming of all types dogs, including puppies
and pregnant females. This will help reduce
infestation of your pet and stop infection to
humans. Round worm symptoms include, vomiting,
coughing, diarrhoea, bowel obstruction,
pneumonia, a dull coat, and a swollen stomach.
Serious cases can be deadly. Round worms are
usually 3 - 6 inches in length and they can
infect dogs by ingestion, in the placenta, or
can be transferred to puppies through the
mother's milk.

Worms can be passed from animal to human.
Children are the most vulnerable, as the eggs
can be picked up from petting their dog and then
using dirty hands when eating, or even more
commonly picking up eggs from a sandpit or dirt
outside. Once in a child's system worms can
cause different health problems, they can live
behind the retina which can cause damage to the
eyesight. This disease is called Toxocariasis,
and has been known in this day and age to still
cause partial blindness in up to 100 children
each year.

At two weeks of age puppies need to be dewormed
and then again at four, six, eight and twelve
weeks. It is vital then to continue with the
worming treatment at four months, five months
and then at six months old. This regular
deworming pattern kills all worms and their
eggs, whether contracted as a foetus, through
infected mother's milk, or by consuming the
eggs. At 6 months of age, you will want to start
a heartworm medication treatment once per month.
It's also an important point to deworm the
mother at the same time as the pups. The cycle
won't be broken if one of them has been treated
at a different time. Contamination on a small
scale will not be a big threat to your dogs
health as they have some immunity and most have
an inbuilt resistance to a small amount of
worms. An abundance of worms however would
impair the health of your dog dramatically. The
nutrients and vitamins needed by your pet will
be used up by the worms. The tissues and the red
blood cells will be destroyed which could lead to
anaemia.

For adult dogs worming treatments may be more
flexible. Some people prefer to keep their pets
on a quarterly programme others like to only
treat them when they have an infestation. I
would strongly advise speaking to your vet about
whether or not continual flea and deworming
treatments throughout your pets life is
necessary. If you have more than one dog it's
likely to be a more regular requirement, but
again check all medication with your vet. It's
not worth being wrong for either your dog, or
you and your family.

some cash and opt for black oil sunflower seeds

it is the most expensive winter seed you can

Nyger with other filler feeds to make it last
longer and go further.

White Millet is a great choice to use as a
filler seed to the more expensive Nyger. It is
the least expensive winter seed and is widely
available at grocery and hardware stores.
Sparrows and Juncos flock to it, making it a
good ground scatter seed.

Water Wisely

Water will begin to freeze at just 32 degrees.
Because of this it can become increasingly
difficult for birds to stay hydrated in the
winter months. Be a friend to the bird and keep
a bird bath ready with clean water year round.
There are several models which can help keep
water thawed as well.

Don't Scrimp

You should check the ingredient label before the
price tag on all bird-seeds, but especially on
winter seeds. This is because many brands of
mixed seeds will provide a lot of cheap filler
seeds such as red millet seed. These filler
seeds are often too hard when frozen for the
birds to crack or are simply undesirable. As a
result the birds will spit them onto the ground
where they stay until they rot. Buying a cheap
mixed seed bag doesn't really save you money,
since about half the bag will go to waste.
Instead, opt for bags of mix that have more of
the seeds you know your flying friends are
searching for.

need to be aware of special considerations for
your older dogs who may also suffer from
arthritis. We've had numerous older dogs during
past winters that have been extremely harsh. In

None of our dogs, even our young ones, were left
outside in these extreme temperatures. We would
never think of exposing one of the older dogs to
that severe cold. That being said, let's explore
some of the options you may have for your own
older dogs with arthritis during extremely cold
weather.

Of course, in a perfect world where it is
possible, it's best to have your older dogs
remain inside at night and also during the day
if the bitter cold continues during the daylight
hours. More than likely they will get so used to
being inside it may be difficult to coax them
outside at any time to take bathroom breaks. But
that inconvenience is far better than having them
endure the cold weather, especially if they have
joint arthritis problems.

If keeping them inside is not an option, the
next best choice would be keeping them inside an

My dogs have eaten this formula and I believe Canidae is a pretty good and nutritious formula so I'm not sending it back. However, for folks who must have the beef and ocean fish formula may not be happy. We have been using Newman's organic dry dog food for over 5 years...it was a Godsend when we discovered it. Our little Jack had such severe allergies she was tormented day and night with unrelieved itching...after trying endless other avenues to find relief for her we were to the point we thought we might have to have her put down for her to find relief.

Extremely pleased with their customer service! If you are looking for an actual organic dog food, Newman's Own is not the way to go. You can imagine the diet she had; Burgers, fries, ice-cream, and the cheapest dog foods on the market. No, she wasn't crazy about Newman's dog food when I switched her to it. My three year old Pittie girl also eats this food, and loves it. She is in perfect health.

My little kitten is as healthy as can be. She is now gaining good amounts of weight, but not getting plump.
