Dog Types That Live Well In Urban Settings

By Nancy James

Even though I live in a city, the dog lover in me can't resist the urge to have a pet scurrying about my apartment. I'm generally a sucker for bigger dogs, but there are certain limitations that any owner must face when figuring out the best breed for a city setting.

Most people living in apartments simply don't have the luxuries that houses do. There are no backyards for dogs to roam about, and there's nowhere for them to go to the bathroom.

Because of the limitations that you'll find in cities, some dogs simply adapt to the settings more effectively than others. I'm going to share a few great dogs that may very well love life in the big city.

Many people love the Dachshund in urban settings. Since they don't typically need to run around much, they're happy spending most of their time indoors. While walking them, you may find that they're somewhat aggressive around other people and dogs, but they're loyal breeds to their owners.

People also like Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. These dogs are extremely cute, and they're very friendly as well. They get along wonderfully with young kids too. The one thing you should know about them is that they do require a bit of exercise, so hopefully you're near a park.

If you like a medium sized breed, then Greyhounds may be the right fit for your home. Don't be fooled by the fact that they're extremely fast, because this doesn't mean that they like to run.

Greyhounds are perfectly content to spend most of their time indoors with little movement. They have a calm demeanor and they don't bark much (if at all), so your neighbors will appreciate them too.

You can always go with a mutt too. In saving a life, you should take pride in the fact that you're giving a dog a home.
