By JasonWhitmore

If your dog is anxious or really aggressive upon seeing new people in your house or he keeps on chasing animals that cross your front yard, then there is a need to socialize him. Socialization helps your dog know how to behave properly when exposed to new situations. The following paragraphs will explain more about the importance of socialization for dogs and how to do it.

Dogs learn how to properly behave through socialization. If you subject him to new situation, he'll learn to respond and behave properly to the situation itself or when he sees other people and other animals. When your pet is well-socialized he will tend to be less aggressive upon seeing new people, new animals or when subjected to new situations.

Dogs need constant socialization to become well-adjusted. At the early stage of your dog's life, probably during his first three weeks to twelve weeks, he is curious about things around him and it would be a lot easier to teach him how to adjust by socializing him. Good socialization at this stage, such as sending your puppy to a socialization class is a good venue for him to meet new animals and can learn good behavior.

Dog's socialization should be continuous and lifelong since your dog may have the tendency to unlearn what he learned from the puppy socialization class if he is not continually socialized. If your dog has not experienced a puppy socialization class, he can still change his behavior by continuous socialization. Other factors that cause dogs to unlearn what they have learned are stress and constant change of environment.

To socialize your dog, you may take him to a walk or to the park. These give a good venue for him to meet new dogs. When you take you expose your dog to the outside world, he must be vaccinated first for he might get contagious diseases from other dogs. In socializing your dog, you must also be careful with your body language. Showing fear when a new dog approaches your dog makes him think that the other dog should be feared.

If you have a puppy, take enroll him to a socialization class then basic obedience lessons in later months. This will help him get used to other animals. Apart from that, this also serves as a good chance for you to meet and talk with your neighbors too. If your dog is well socialized, you do not have to worry much about his behavior on taking him to places where he will see people and other dogs.
