Learn About Police Dog Training

By Luke Obermeyer

Animals are intelligent beings. Many are capable of learning amazing tasks. Through repetition and anticipation, they can be trained to play games. They can learn to do entertaining stunts. They can become hard workers. They earn respect and recognition. Such an animal is the graduate of a police dog training program.

In the mid 1800s, European canines began working in law enforcement. Night shift officers felt the need for protection. Criminals in dark alleys could not hide from the keen senses of the Bloodhound or Belgium malinois. Thieves preferred to surrender rather than risk attack. A perfect assistant for the night officer was discovered.

Belgium and Germany law enforcement agencies started classes for the animals. They were also trained to do guard duty for military. After World War II, crime increased. Soldiers told how they had seen k9s at work during the war. London and other European city officials liked the idea. Law enforcement personnel started k9 patrols. The animals proved to be of great assistance to them all.

In the early 1970s, law enforcement in the United States began employing k9s. European schools were well known for the quality animals they produced. Many purchase already trained k9s from Europe. The program is ongoing throughout the career of the animal. Their abilities make them a valuable asset to their co-workers and community.

These animals possess intelligence, speed, aggression, and agility. But the most qualifying trait is their strong sense of smell. After mastering obedience, specialty classes begins. They become specialists at sniffing out drugs, bombs, other objects and people. Some assist in search and rescue missions, natural disasters, etc. Many assist their partner in making arrests. Confrontations are avoided when an angry growl is demonstrated.

K9s are a respected by their handlers and co-workers. Many wear a badge to signify their importance. Some wear a bullet proof vest. Intentional killing of a k9 is a felony. When killed in the line of duty, a funeral is held. Many have lost their lives defending their partner. The most popular breed for law enforcement continues to be the Belgium malinois and German shepherd.

Online courses offer convenient instruction for police dog trainers. Classes at universities are another option. Persons interested may also find schools listed in telephone directories.
