Maltese Training to Remedy Barking Problem

By Clare Rosewood

Maltese training is usually a challenging task not just because of their playful character but also because their small size and expressive appearance can make it easy for them to win over anyone's heart consequently letting them escape from anything. But can there be more challenging than having a small pet with behavior problem such as excessive barking?

Based on some surveys, the maltese is the most dumped dog in Australia and Korea citing this breed's tendency to bark excessively. While it's certainly difficult to tolerate noise created by a barking dog, the number of dogs being dumped wouldn't rise only if owners are know what to do to handle the scenario.

We all know that barking couldn't totally be eliminated considering the fact that it's every dog's natural response to. The easiest way to handle the issue is to train the dog as to when is the right instance to start barking and how to end barking on command. If your dog barks on automobiles or people like the postman, passersby and kids laughing, then you might have not included socialization during maltese training. Help him associate these things with something positive by making each encounter interesting. Rewarding him with treats or praise whenever he remains calm when a car or a shouting kid is around can do the trick.

A dog may also bark if he has separation anxiety or if he's not comfortable of his condition. Staying outside while the temperature is scorching hot or freezing cold is clearly uncomfortable to dogs as much as it is to humans. It would be best to move his crate or bed to a snug and safe spot where family members stay most of the time.

Ask assistance from someone to train him to bark on command. Then ask your assistant to knock at the door or other hard surface but before that, say "speak". If he barks, reward him with treat or praise until he learns to associate the command with the act. If he figured out the notion that he should stay calm after the treat, say "quiet" or other command with similar meaning.

Maltese training is one sure way to have a well mannered pet everyone loves to be around. If every owner train their pet correctly, for sure it will greatly reduce the number of maltese being abandoned.
