Potty Training An Adult Dog

By Joe Jackson

Potty training an adult dog takes some time and patience. Before you get the end result you desire, you'll have to clean up messes inside the house while your pet gets trained. It doesn't pay to get angry or try and chastise the untrained animal. Chances are he won't even know why he's being punished.

Instead of scolding, try positive reinforcement for a change. Pet him and praise him when he does the right thing. Offer him a dog treat. And when he slips up, ignore him completely. Leave him outdoors while you go inside to clean up the mess. Remove the debris, and get rid of the smell using deodarant sprays. Then, work on building a positive habit, by taking out your dog after every meal. Go to the same spot each time for doing his business. In a short while, your pet will learn that he must go outdoors for potty.

Problems with potty training arise because the owners confuse their pets and don't follow a consistent and correct method of training them. The dog can be totally confused if you give him conflicting signals.

A dog aims to please his owner and if you confuse him he will tend to get nervous and lose his confidence. He may bark and bit and exhibit other behavioral problems. If he does and your training is only making him worse then take him to dog training school or hire a dog trainer. Professionals will know how to train him and also help him overcome his nervousness and gain his confidence back. But you will need to learn how to deal with him too.

There are different options available for training older dog. You might have a well behaved and trained dog, and don't think any further training is needed. But if your dog is obedient and intelligent, then you and your pet will have a whole lot more fun together if you take him to an advanced training course. If he learns to enjoy the additional challenges, he'll quickly learn many new tricks and even have fun as he does it.
