Article From SubmitYOURArticle.com: How Do You Prevent A Dog Attack? One Method Is To Chain A Dog For Long Periods Of Time

I am certain everyone has heard of, read about or
even seen a violent dog attack on an individual
at some time. Regrettably, sometimes it is a
child who is the one who gets attacked, which
makes it even more tragic. What instigates these
attacks and is there a way to keep them from
happening?

There are a lot of possible reasons behind dog
attacks. The main one that comes to mind is an
attack by a dog that is tied up to an inanimate
object. Dogs are naturally friendly animals and
have most of the feelings that are similar to
what humans have. To leave a dog young or old
tied to a tree, doghouse, fence or anything else
is tantamount to isolating a human from contact
with other humans. After a period of time of
this confinement it is likely that the normal
behavior and temperament of either dog or human
will change for the worse. A dog may envision
his small space as his own and confront anyone
who enters within his confines, protecting what
little is his.

Another motive dogs have to be aggressive while
tethered is the truth that being vicious is
their only means of survival. They aren't able
to escape whatever they feel might hurt them.
Between their two options of fight or flight,
their flight option has been eliminated. So the
only option they have left is to fight.

Dogs also enjoy migrating, moving from one place
to another, whether it is by strolling along with
their person or traveling on their own ramblings.
They have to have physical exercise to remain
sound of mind and balanced. A dog left alone for
long periods of time on a chain does not get this
badly needed activity and will try to find other
outlets for the unreleased energy. He might
decide to dig holes or destroy anything close at
hand. He might also ferociously guard his space,
barking and lurching, hoping to break free of his
bonds.

In this event, the most evident method of
avoiding a dog attack is by staying out of reach
of any unfamiliar dog attached to any object by a
chain. Kids should not be let near ANY dog that
is tied up, even if they know the dog.
Occasionally a confined dog will view a small
child as a danger to his space, possibly seeing
the little one as just another small animal to
compete with over personal boundaries.

It is regrettable that any dog would ever be kept
tied up at all. It goes contrary to every
familiar ounce of their existence -
psychologically, physically, socially and
emotionally. The best way to avert a dangerous
encounter with a chained up dog is to never tie
it up to begin with. The dog that is now
dangerous after years confined to a small area
would have been a fantastic, loving, completely
steadfast dog if not for the seclusion and
imprisonment he was condemned to.

This is simply one motive for a dog attack.
There are many more. For now, however, if you
own a dog being kept on a chain, please try to
come up with some kind of an alternative. This
could mean building a fence, dropping her off at
a dog day care facility where she will have the
opportunity to interact with other dogs, or
taking her for walks on a daily basis. Please
reconsider confining such a social creature on a
chain and avoid an inevitable dog attack.

If you need to walk near a dog who is tied up and
lunging at its restraint, be sure to carry with
you some form of defense in case the dog does get
loose and tries to attack you. This can involve
an umbrella, which will shock a dog when opened
quickly, or a container of canine pepper spray
which will, if targeted at the face of an
advancing vicious dog, ward off an attack. Never
surmise that just because a dog is restrained,
you are protected at a distance. There is always
the possibility of the chain, rope, cable or
collar breaking and the dog getting loose. Be
safe and continually alert to your environment.
