For A Happy, Devoted Family Pet Consider A Labradoodle

By Gloria Gardner

The labradoodle is not yet recognized as a true breed. If looking for a labradoodle New England pet-lovers should approach a local reputable breeder. The dog was specifically developed for a particular purpose but has become so popular that there are many out there that have been bred with little attention to the health and temperament of their parents.

The original idea was to breed a low-allergenic dog that could be trained as a guide dog. Until the labradoodle came along, sight-impaired people who had allergies to dog hair and dander were unable to have the services of a guide dog. Crossing Labrador retrievers and poodles resulted in intelligent dogs, a proportion of which had low- or non-allergenic fur.

Because the labradoodle is still evolving, consistency of temperament and coat type have not yet been established. Australia, Britain and the United States are all developing the hybrid along slightly different lines. A major problem for breeders is getting consistency in the allergenic qualities of the coat.

These dogs fill roles as seizure alert, assistance, therapy and guide dogs. However many more have become loved pets and companions. This has led to breeders producing a range of colors including silver, cream, blue, lavender and chocolate.

The distinctive single coat comes in several types and is beautifully soft to touch. A wool coat is distinguished by hanging in loose spirals. The fleece coat may be curly or wavy. The Australian hybrid is being bred as Standard, Medium and Miniature in size.

As the type has not been established for very long, there is some inconsistency regarding temperament and health issues. Genuine breeders will have had their stud stock checked for hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and von Willebrand Disease. Most dogs are very intuitive, sociable and happy. They have plenty of energy when running free but are quiet when handled. They are very people-oriented. By approaching a reputable breeder of the Labradoodle New England residents can be assured of purchasing a healthy dog.
