ACNE or Pimple Problems with Cats, Puppies, and Adult Dogs
Though there can be various reasons for Acne
problems in your pet, at the outset of this
discussion, we need to determine if the issue
you're seeking help with is strictly an 'Acne
only' problem, or just one symptom of a much
broader problem. If your pet has 'other' issues
such as itching, skin problems or inflammation,
rashes, licking of feet, or ear infections,
you're likely facing a more complex problem. If
that is the case, you should visit here -
Allergies or Yeast? - to do an assessment to be
sure you're on the right track, and get the
correct help.
If no other symptoms, and the Acne is all you
seem to be combating, please continue with the
remainder of this article.
Puppy acne is a fairly common condition in
young, maturing dogs, but is somewhat more
prevalent in the large and giant breeds. It
mostly occurs around the ages of 3 to 18 months
of age. Acne will most often appear as small
bumps (pimples) around the chin and lips, but
may also extend to the vaginal area. In more
severe cases, you may notice breakouts along the
top line or near the rump.
Causes for acne at this age are basically due to
the over-taxing of an underdeveloped immune
system. At this age, the body is still under
development, and growing. The natural flora,
which helps to protect the system from invading
bacteria, is not yet fully established in the GI
tract. This can take two years or more to be
accomplished. Hormonal changes are taking place
during this time period. Add to that, it is
during this time that they are exposed to
Vaccinations, or elective surgeries like ear or
tail cropping, or even spay/neuter procedures.
Thankfully, acne is not a life threatening
problem, but it is a sign of a system under
stress. It is always a good idea to support the
body with a well rounded nutritional program.
This would include a super-premium pet food
intended for the particular breed in question,
and the right nutritional supplementation to
help support the immune system. There are all
natural pet health supplements/products ideal
for providing the help you need in dealing with
this condition. Also, and of significant
importance, we suggest that you examine
Recommended Foods page and be sure you are
providing the quality of nutrition your pet
deserves and needs for a 'quality life'. The
rule of thumb being - "If you can find it in a
big store, it's likely not of appropriate
quality for your pet"; this rule has only a few
exceptions.
Choosing Premium Pet Foods, and Why:
Super-premium foods have these five
characteristics:
1) They are made with Human-Grade ingredients;
no fillers, by-products or artificial colors or
flavorings are used.
2) They are preserved naturally, without the
use of harsh, chemical preservatives.
3) They have a balanced Omega Fatty acid
content, which is important for the skin and
coat.
4) They use a protection mechanism
(micro-encapsulation) for the vitamins and
minerals, such as chelation or sequestering.
This serves two important functions; First, it
protects the vitamins and minerals from breaking
down in the bag (storage). Secondly, it protects
the vitamins and minerals from the stomach
acids, giving greater delivery to the small
intestine for absorption.
5) They incorporate digestive enzymes and
friendly bacteria (probiotics) in their blends.
Since these ingredients are heat sensitive, they
must be included in a cold process at the end of
the food making cycle.
