Toxins in Manure

By Lianne Derocco

Chemicals, antibiotics, and other growth promoting substances are mixed in swine feeds, including the organic materials like corn, fish meal, soya meal and other sources of protein, and this is the composition of swine feeds. Swine wastes are not wholly wastes but also contain some of the undigested food including the chemicals and medicines because no 100 percent digestion takes place. The soil that comes in contact with these wastes can also be in contact with the toxins and bacteria. Swine wastes are also sometimes used as fertilizers, and this pose risks to people, with the harmful substances included in the mixture of soil.

Hog waste contains potential harmful substances that can expose people to risks and this includes bacteria and other pathogens. Ammonia and hydrogen sulfides are in the animal waste, and these are already the harmful gases if inhaled. Chemicals, antibiotics, and other growth promoting materials are incorporated in high volumes in the feeds and which ultimately are excreted in the hog waste. There can already be antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria from these wastes and will not fit well with people. Toxic substances, and a lot of them, can already be in the hog waste, and of which people also use to fertilize their farms.

Swine waste contains toxic and harmful substances like ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, methane, and other harmful gases that are very harmful especially when already in large doses. These are toxic chemicals and gases that can cause nausea, headaches, respiratory problems, and other forms of discomfort not only to people but to the animals also. This is mainly the reason that hog wastes are properly disposed of because of the potential danger it gives to people and also to the hogs. Lagoons are built to hold these wastes.

In the lagoons and waste pits are placed the hog wastes, and water is used to spray and clean the wastes and led into the canals and ultimately into the pits. There are seepages that may happen though in the canals and the pits, and this is a big possibility. There is a big possibility that these harmful substances will mix with the groundwater, when these seepages occur, thus posing a great danger to humans. Placing liners in the lagoons to prevent seepages are done by the hog farmers, and also chemicals added.

In the lagoons and pits, foam will build up on the surface, especially when the volume of hog waste is already high. The foam and underneath this is already very toxic and dangerous because the gases are trapped, especially the methane build up underneath. There can also be sludge and crusts in the lagoons building up in huge volumes, making the pumping out of these wastes very difficult. The hog farmers are coming out with their solutions to this.

They have the solution in Activator Plus and also AgraSphere, where their lagoon and pit concerns are already solved. Activator Plus is the chemical used that helps break down the animal waste by enhancing natural bacteria and enzymes in the waste. AgraSphere is their solution in the sludge and crust build up where it is just placed directly into the problem areas. The product is just tossed directly into these areas where sludge and crust are heavy and waste remedial solutions are then easy to implement.
