Cat Care 101: Ensuring The Health And Happiness Of Your Feline Friend

Becoming a cat owner is a big decision. Sure cats
have a history of being independent pets, however
this doesn't mean you don't have to take care of
them. There are a number of things to consider
when caring for a pet cat. The article below will
illustrate what things you need to know.

If your dog and cat are best friends, be sure to
keep them separate after flea treatment. Your
dog's flea products are very hazardous for cats.
Cats that come in contact with dog flea products
often die. Be sure to use only cat products on
your cat and only dog products on your dog..

For a healthier, happier cat choose plain litter
over scented litter. Cats like nice, clean,
clumping cat litter. Scoop your cats litter box
daily and change it completely every three days
or so. When you change the box, wash it out with
water and dish soap. Don't waste your money on
liners as cats tend to destroy them.

If you absolutely must bathe a cat, set
everything up in advance. Set up two tubs large
enough to dunk a cat. Fill them with comfortably
warm water. Set your open bottle of cat shampoo,
a heavy towel, and a secure pet carrier close by.
Wear heavy rubber gloves. Grasp your cat by the
scruff of the neck. Dunk, shampoo and scrub
quickly in one tub. Dunk to rinse in the second
tub. Wrap the cat securely in the towel and place
in the carrier to dry.

Check your cat for ticks and fleas every week. If
your cat does have fleas, there is a good chance
that you also have fleas in your home. You might
need some flea bombs or premise-control sprays,
along with treating the cat, to get rid of the
issue. If you don't know what products to use for
controlling ticks and fleas, talk to your vet for
some safe options.

If your cat kicks litter all over the floor,
simply use a bigger container. A large, roomy
tote with high sides makes a good litter box. A
big round tub also makes a good litter box. A
restaurant size bus tub is a capacious litter
box. Providing higher sides and more space will
solve your cat's litter kicking problem.

Don't be pushy when you are getting to know your
new cat. Cats prefer to be in control and take
things at their own pace. Make sure your new cat
is comfortable and safe. Let your cat take its
time exploring its new environment. When your cat
feels at home, it will be more likely to try to
make friends with you.

At least one of the above ideas should keep your
cat entertained on those rainy nights. Try to
work it as an activity the both of you can
partake in. Playing games with your cat teaches
it that the two of you can have an exciting time
together while keeping it active and healthy.
