How Window Bird Feeders Can Bring Nature Inside

By Debra Garrison

Many people try to find ways to get closer to nature. Watching birds, squirrels, and other creatures can make you feel so close with nature. A walk through the park or a hike in the forest can show you a variety of beautiful creatures, but you don't have to go far to see nature's beauty. You can enjoy the beauty of nature right in your backyard, or from the comfort of your home. The easiest way to do this is by attaching a window bird feeder to your home.

Feeding birds is something that has been enjoyable for people for a very long time. Bringing different kinds of aviary creatures into your yard can be an enjoyable pastime. You can attract many different kinds of birds by using varying kinds of seeds and feeders.

If you are looking to attract a wide variety of creatures, the best option is to use a feed containing black sunflower seeds. This is attractive to almost all seed eating birds. A tray would be the best kind to attract the largest variety.

If it is attracting a specific kind of bird that is the most important to you, you will need to use a specific kind of feed and feeder. You may also use more than one feeder in your yard to bring in many different species of birds.

If you are trying to bring in insect eating aviary creatures, such as woodpeckers, chickadees, or jays you will need to use suet. Hummingbirds eat liquid nectar and are attracted by brightly colored feed openings. Hopper feeders are good to attract sparrows, cardinals, and finches.

If you are looking for the best experience when it comes to bird watching, a window feeder is the way to go. These feeders use suction cups, or hook onto the frames, and give you a great view. Finches, titmouse varieties, and chickadees are attracted to these.

This kind is also easier to clean since it is harder for bacteria to build up in the seed. This makes it safer for the fowl. They also prevent the issue of clear windows confusing birds and causing them to fly into them. This is a common problem when stand feeders are placed within three feet of windows.

Children and pets are also interested by window feeders. Children can gain educational experiences by watching and researching the birds that they see. It is a great activity to have your children draw pictures of the birds they see outside their window.

Feeders in the window are also good for keeping indoor cats entertained. The cats can have the feeling of being outdoors and stalking prey, but the birds remain safe and the cats remain safely indoors. Dogs, too, can enjoy watching the birds. This can be especially exciting for dogs if you use a tray feeder, which may attract squirrels.

Both a stand feeder and a window bird feeder are good options. Make sure, though, that whatever option you choose you do not feed the birds over the winter. It may seem like it is helpful to the birds, but it is actually disruptive to their natural migration patterns and can harm them in the long run.
