For many people, there is a breed of dog that is preferred over others. Some individuals prefer a mixed breed adopted from the humane shelter, but researching a specific breed is a good idea. It will give you a better idea of what to expect when you wring the animal into your family. A registered dog of this breed will have certain characteristics. The head is large, but the dog's body is wide and medium-sized with short legs. There are skin folds on the skull and forehead which result from excess skin. The dog's muzzle is wide and short. The nose has large nostrils and is black in color. The bulldog's ears are small and close set. Like the head, the animal's jaws are broad with a significant underbite. Glossy, short and straight hairs make up the coat, with colors ranging from red to white, as well as pale yellow, red brindle, fawn, pale red and various combinations of the hues.

The history of the breed goes back to the Asiatic mastiff. The name "bull" is linked to the shape and size of the a small bull. These animals were also used in arena conflicts to bait full-sized bulls. The practice was disallowed in the 19th century. The term "bull-headed" is not too strong for the strong determination of the breed.

The bulldog breed is one which adapts very well to apartment living. Owners must be sure to avoid extremes of temperature, since the breed is subject to heat stroke and to cold. Owners of an English Bulldog must be prepared to provide a daily walk for exercise and overall health. This activity will prevent many behavioral problems.

Prospective owners should be aware of typical health and congenital problems with the animal. They may have problems with breathing and the windpipe can be too small. Eyesight may be poor. They are prone to joint problems. The dogs may experience skin infections. They don't tolerate temperature extremes. Avoid feeding them anything other than standard dog food, since other foods can create flatulence.

Care of an English bulldog is relatively simple. The dog is an average shedder. He should be brushed and combed daily using a firm bristle brush. Baths are on an as needed basis. One task that should be done every day is to wipe the dog's face with a damp cloth. This helps to keep the inside of the wrinkles from chafing, food residue and parasites.

The breeder is important if puppies are being selected. If you are a prospective buyer, check out the physical facility where the puppies are kept. They should be kept in clean, warm and dry environments. You should also review the parentage of the puppy. A breeder should always have the current certification and licenses.

English Bulldogs for sale are popular animals for apartments. No outdoor space is required, but the dogs need to be walked daily. Check out the temperament which can be quite dominating if not managed firmly.
