Facts About Pig Farming

By Lianne Derocco

There's a lot that you just don't know about where all those meat that you're eating comes from. Now hog farming is actually a relevant matter that you should know even only a little or just the basic information about for at least you have some idea regarding the subject matter. So to start it off, there are more than 70,000 hog farms in the United States, ranging from those small farms to large scale factory farms. More than 120 million pigs are raised each year for consumption in the United States which pretty much covers a great deal of meat supply in the market. In fact, only China and Brazil produce more pigs than the United States.

Pork is actually the top meat choice around the globe and statistics show that more than 40% of meat consumption worldwide is pork and not beef, which many people mistakenly believe. Poultry follows in third place overall, and then other types of livestock, such as lamb or sheep. In the United States, ham and bacon are the two most popular products produced and consumed overall.

While pork products are a big part of our diets, there are some issues associated with hog farming. A typical factory hog farm provides millions of tons of waste each year. This waste can produce many toxic gases and chemicals and these can be harmful to the local human population as well as harming the local ecosystem. However, the waste also can be used to produce fertilizer for crops and scientists are trying to find ways to create electricity and power from hog waste.

So what are those many typical problems associated with hog waste and how can you deal with them respectively? Often, sludge forms on the bottom of a waste pit or lagoon, and this creates problems. In addition, crusting often occurs on the surface, which creates excess odors and flies, both of which present problems for the surrounding environment.

To combat these problems, there are natural products such as Agra Sphere and the Lagoon Agra Sphere which are pretty popular in the market that farmers can readily use. What's good about these products is that they contain no chemicals and instead use naturally occurring bacteria to basically eat up the sludge and crust that often forms in every waste system that you happen to have.

Now if you ever have especially difficult-to-treat top-level crusting, treat the waste management system with a product such as Activator Plus. This type of waste management product naturally eats away at the crust and once the crust has liquefied, you should continue to treat regularly with Agra Sphere. Not only will this natural product keep problems at bay but it also improves the nutrient value of your manure or hog waste for special use as a fertilizer.
