Have A Question About Dogs? We'll Answer It

By Don Edwards

Do you want to own a dog? Do you know what it takes to truly care for your dog in the best way possible? If you think you know it all, but want to learn more, or if you're a novice, this article provides a ton of up-to-date information about owning a dog, so read on.

It costs a lot to own a dog. High quality dog food, medical care, toys and treats can easily run close to $1,000 in a year. One huge expense you might encounter is emergency vet care, so you may want to think about getting health insurance for your pet.

If you are planning to take your dog on an extended car-ride, talk to your vet about motion sickness medication first. Avoid feeding him before setting out to prevent queasiness and vomiting and make sure you buy him bottled water if you are traveling to any destination that is known to have issues with water quality.

When you have a dog, make sure that you give him enough water. Water should be made available to your dog at all times of the day, particularly in the summertime. Put his water bowl somewhere where no one will trip over it, otherwise you'll be cleaning your floors all day!

If you have an outdoor pet, build a shelter for him or buy one that is ready to use. Especially if your dog's feet get wet, exposure to very cold temperatures for long time periods can cause stress and other health issues. Give your dog a shelter that is spacious and dry, and your dog will be protected from the hard winds and dampness.

Keep your dog warm during winter with the latest in canine fashion and accessories. You may think it's just for show, but dogs need protection from the elements too! Keeping your dog's paw-pads dry is essential to their health in sub-freezing weather, so invest in suede or leather footwear and pick him up a coat while you're at it. Make them instead if you are creative!

Be careful around Christmas time with a dog in your home; it's the busiest time of year at 24/7 animal clinics! Things like hanging and tree lights pose a danger to your dog, as they could become tangled or gnaw their way down to raw wires. The loveliest of Christmas plants are also hazardous to a dog's health, so take extra care during holidays.

Check and double check your fenced in yard for spots your dog could escape through before letting him roam. The most secure method of keeping your dog outside is on a long run with a strong collar, but if you are comfortable that your fence can hold him, he'll enjoy that even more. Just make sure there's no room for error!

After reading this article, you should have a better understanding of what is involved in owning a dog. If you already own a dog, you can make use of this information to take better care of it. If you are thinking about getting a dog, this article can help you make up your mind.
