Helping You Get A Better Understanding About Dogs With Simple Tips

By Sally Byrd

When you first dream of getting a dog, it's all sweetness and submissiveness. You may get something quite different. No matter what, you'll have a dog you must care for and this article can show you how.

Spay or neuter your dog. Research suggests that this small thing can give extended life to your dog by reducing cancer risk. Spayed and neutered dogs wander less often as well, so this reduces likelihood of your dog getting hit on the road or lost.

It's a great idea to keep a snap-shot of your dog handy (a digital pic on your phone is ideal) whenever you're traveling with him. This allows you to have a photo of him if he gets lost.

Your daily lifestyle should help guide your choice of dog breed. Do not buy a dog that is lazy if you are very active. If you are more of a homebody, a smaller, less active dog who enjoying being pampered is the better choice. Finding a dog that matches your personality will make both of you happy.

If you have a dog that does something right, like sitting when you're getting out the leash, you should give the animal lots of praise and affection. This is to let the dog know that you want more of that behavior. He'll learn that praise will come when he is good, too.

Speak with your vet about how much food should your dog be eating each day. Some people refer to the label on the package to determine the quantity of food to feed their dogs, but those guidelines are not always right and using them can cause your dog to become overweight. Speak with a vet about your dog's needs and what they should have.

Don't buy the cheapest food for your dog. The cheaper dog foods have tons of additives and preservatives which aren't the best for your dog. Use an animal advocacy group or some kind of consumer awareness group to see if you can get a list of good foods that are professionally recommended. Higher quality dog food will offer your dog many health benefits.

When making a dog food selection, the cheap stuff is rarely the best choice. Later on, it will help that you've fed your dog quality and nutritious food. Though this may cost you a bit more, you can rest easily knowing that the dog is eating properly.

Keep a dog tag on your dog at all times. This is typically a collar with a tag on it. Include your dog's name and your phone number on the tag. You can also opt to have a micro-chip inserted into your dog.

Dogs often get cuts from stepping on glass and other debris. If your dog gets a cut, make sure that it is washed with antiseptic and then have a bandage wrapped around the wound. If it is a very deep cut, you should take him to a vet.

You dog should go to the vet on a regular basis. You must keep up with vaccinations, heartworm testing and physical exams for your dog. With a puppy, you will need to visit your vet a little more often. You need to go to the vet as soon as your dog seems sick or hurt.

When your dog has a bathroom accident on the floor, be sure to thoroughly clean the area. A combination of an industrial strength cleaner preceding an odor remover is effective. If any scent remains, the dog might soil the area over and over.

Some breeds have inherent health issues you need to watch for. Take the time to read up on your breed so that you don't get any surprises down the road. Your vet can also tell you how to give your dog the best odds for overcoming any conditions that are typical for his breed.

You may think it's okay to share your own snacks with your dog. Sometimes that's okay, but certain foods are bad for dogs. Grapes, chocolate, and caffeine are all things that you should never give your pup. These food items can seriously harm your dog.

Before committing to a dog, consider the kind of life you currently have, from how often you vacation to the sort of events you engage in. Wanting a dog doesn't mean you'll provide the best environment for him.

Wash your dog's dishes regularly. Germs can develop on a dirty bowl, especially if food or water stays in it for a long time. Make sure to wash out the bowls each day to disinfect them.

Your puppy might be cute when he eats your stuff, but it will not be cute if it is something you really like and they are full grown. Stop bad behavior at its onset. When you see your puppy doing something they shouldn't, stop the behavior immediately. This will help you to train your dog effectively.

If you have kids, then you probably know how important schedules are. There is no reason they shouldn't in a dog's life, too. Uncertainty about where the day is going will make your dog irritable and prone to disobedience. Their mood and behavior go hand-in-hand. This means you should have set times for play, training, and meals.

Take this advice to heart. Use it liberally and you will see that your dog can be a model of good behavior. There is nothing greater than receiving unconditional love from a well-trained pet dog.
