Taking Care Of A Vomiting Dog

By Shari Evans

Dogs have very sensitive stomach yet, they tend to eat some things that are on the floor and dig on the garbage sack to find some treats. They are also likely to overeat and bloat themselves with food and water. Because of this, they are experiencing an upset stomach and other digestive problems which are sometimes being accompanied with vomiting. Every time that your dog vomits, they can experience pain and discomfort. In this condition, they would need your tender loving care to put them at ease and help them to recover.

What to Feed your Dog?

A medication is not advisable on the first instance that your dog had vomited. A pet parent should not panic until their baby dog vomits for many times on the same hour or day. Once this had happened, you would need to take some actions immediately to get their digestion back to normal. The first thing that you have to do is to take the food bowl and withhold food intake for the next 12 to 24 hours. Placing them under a fasting period will reset the abnormal rhythm of their digestion and keep it back on track. Give water to your poor little dog but make sure that they won't bloat themselves with it.

After the fasting period, you can put the dog under a bland diet. You can buy some bland diet stuff in a pet store or you can make your own. Mix rice, cottage cheese and chicken meat together and feed your dog in a very small amount every hour. This will help your dog's stomach to adjust and get reintroduced with food. Give a small dose of antacid to calm the stomach. If the dog refuses to eat or drink, force him to swallow some water from a syringe by landing a few drops on their cheeks.

Comforting a Vomiting Dog

Keep the dog indoors and let him stay in a cool, comfy and clean bedding. This will prevent him from being exposed to heat and bacteria outside which causes nausea. Do not bathe the dog while he is sick as this can only make the condition worse. Make sure that your pooch remains hydrated and provide an ice cube in case that he doesn't want to drink from the syringe. Some dogs are feeling hot and will search for cold water. Close the lid of the toilet to prevent him from drinking the cold water with bacteria.

Monitor your dog's condition and see what is in the vomit. It may not be a good view but this step is needed to determine the dog's status. A yellow vomit is stomach bile which is normal to be thrown up once but it can be dangerous if it happens for many times. Blood, feces and coffee-like vomit is also a dangerous case as death may follow in hours. On this situations, call your veterinarian immediately for treatments. Try to be on your pooch's side as much as possible. They too have emotions and every pain can be handled easier if you are giving some tender loving care.
