You Can Have A Dog In The Home

By Jim Johnson

Owning a dog is a major responsibility; for starters you have to figure out exactly what type of food to feed him. A lot of people agree with you. You can improve the situation with a little research on your part. You can do a great job as a dog owner yourself; just take a look at the hints below.

You may know that chocolate is dangerous for dogs, but you may not know the specifics. Chocolate is dangerous because of the stimulants caffeine and theobromine. Baking chocolate is the most dangerous, with a high amount of stimulants. White chocolate contains the least amount of stimulants. Take you dog to vet if he ingests chocolate.

Never allow your dog to ride in a car unsecured. Sitting on your lap or in the front seat is dangerous both to him and your ability to drive. Always place him in an appropriately sized pet carrier or invest in a pet seat belt that will keep him snug and safe in the middle of the back seat.

Try not to feed your dog any table scraps. This teaches dogs bad habits. Table scraps can actually lead to obesity and other health concerns. Don't allow your dog to beg at the table while you are eating.

Take your grown dog to the vet at least once a year. The vet will check to see if the dog's vaccines up to date. In addition, the vet will check the dog's teeth and vital signs. If any major health or behavioral issues come up between annual checkups, you should see the vet earlier.

Always teach your dog to walk properly on a leash. He should be on your side, not behind or ahead of you, and he should know how to respond when told to "heel." If your pet is leash trained, it'll be safer, and you'll enjoy walks more as well. This will also help to prevent your dog from choking themselves, when trying to pull ahead.

Never give your dog milk! It's not necessary for his body and he doesn't have the proper enzymes to digest it anyway. Feeding your dog cow's milk can lead to chronic diarrhea and leave him with an upset stomach, among other health problems. Stick with plain old water for a healthy and hydrated dog.

Just like humans, dogs need to get a good amount of exercise each and every day. If your dog does not get the exercise it needs, it health will decline, and so will his attitude towards life. Take the time to exercise your dog for at least a half hour each day for the best results.

If you want a happy and healthy dog, you must be a responsible pet owner. There are many things you must do and that will not only help your dog, but will be helpful to you and your relationship with him, too. Use the tips here to make sure your time with your dog is the best it can be.
