All You Need To Know About Dog Breeds - A Lowdown On Pugs

The Pug belongs to the toy dog group and is
characterized by their wrinkly, short-muzzled
face and their curled tail. They are generally
very small yet compact with well-defined muscles.
They have a glossy coat and they come in a
variety of color (fawn being the most common).
Pugs have very large dark eyes. They are quite a
very popular breed because they can be very
loyal, affectionate and loving.

History

There have been many debates and speculations
with regards to the origins of the Pug. But they
are generally known to have Chinese origins over
a thousand years ago. Pugs are said to be
companions of Buddhist monks while in Tibet. From
China, Pugs were brought to Europe by the Dutch
East India Company. And they quickly became
highly sought as they become the dogs of the
royalty and aristocrats. Pugs are said to be
related to the Pekingese while there are those
that believes they originated from the Mastiff or
Bulldog. Napoleon's wife owned a pug that she
used to send secret messages to her husband while
in prison. The Pug was registered with the AKC in
1885 and from there, they continued to be a
favorite.

Personality

The popularity of the Pug can be partly
attributed to their personality. Pugs are known
to have happy-go-lucky attitude. They are also
very playful and lively. They are an ideal family
dog because they are extremely loyal, loving and
affectionate. If you have children at home, then
they will surely love to have a Pug around as
they considered to be very good with children.
Aside from children, they are also recommended
companions for the elderly. Pugs are known to
have very poor road sense, so as much as possible
keep them in an enclosed area.

Grooming

Pugs have a fine short coat so they require very
minimal grooming. Spend around 10 minutes every
day when grooming a Pug. First use a fine steel
comb and then finish it with a bristle brush.
When bathing, make sure that you thoroughly clean
the creases on its face as it can accumulate
dirt. Use a shampoo only when necessary. Pugs are
known to be heavy shedders.

If cared properly, Pugs can live up to 12 to 15
years. Although you have to keep in mind that
they are prone to catching colds and are easily
stressed when the temperature is too hot or too
cold. Exercise is also required but not too much
because they easily overheat. When it comes to
dog training, pugs aren't known to be the
smartest breed. They can be fairly stubborn but
not as headstrong as compared to other breeds
such as Pit Bulls or Huskies. Pugs are highly
recommended as family pets.
