Bearded Dragons - Get To Know This Interesting Exotic Pet

By Stephen Ayer

One of the most popular amongst exotic pet keepers is the bearded dragon. It was not very hard to come up with a good name for it: It has a chunk of spiny tissue that hangs below its chin that it can increase to make it bigger and more intimidating. That process makes it seem like it possesses a beard.

If you wish to view one in their habitat, you will need to go to the dry regions and woods of Australia. They like to enjoy their time warming on large stones, covering in the cover, and lounging on branches and tree limbs. You may also find them in areas where families reside. This is ordinarily a fantastic source of food for them as they can munch on the leftovers put aside by humans.

While they are innocuous, bearded dragons seem very unsafe to their enemies. The sides of their faces are covered with spiked scales, and those run down the sides or their bodies. While they are not in fact sharp, a predator may think they are, and in addition they function as defense for the lizard's skin. The reptile is flat, and as a consequence it lies close to the earth, but its tummy is spherical on the sides making it look fuller than it actually is.

Another way they make themselves seem more threatening is to modify colorings. Brighter colors usually warn other beardies and other beings of peril. It may also be that a young female could become attracted to this lively, handsome young beardie that is sporting a vibrant coat.

They will adjust colors when they are cold. The dark shade maintains more heat. If that does not do the trick, they're able to drill down down and get away underneath gravel and earth to get out of the cold. They often even brumate, which, similar to hibernation, is when they go dormant. When the lizard accomplishes this, it drops its rate of metabolism down so that it burns less energy, and it can actually settle for a bare minimum quantity of food.

Almost all enthusiasts lovingly call their reptiles beardies for short. They are of the category of Pogona, and they are a variety of agamid lizard, or dragon lizard. The bearded dragon's precise name is Pogona vitticeps.

These lizards are not fussy predators: They take in almost anything they come across, which consists of numerous bugs, fruits and vegetables. This holds true in the wild in addition to confinement. Grown ups will weigh between one and one-half pounds. One foot to one foot-and-a-half is common in the wild, nevertheless, in captivity they may grow to be two feet in length.

If you intent to a different kind of pet that you and your children will appreciate, a bearded dragon might be a good selection. They are fantastic with children, and are generally gentle and uncomplicated to look after. Countless keepers end up spending hours looking at and musing over their bearded dragon.
