When mechanization displaced these workers, many migrated to France. These tenacious little dogs were an instant favorite. Wealthy Americans visiting France also became enamored of this comical, fun loving little dog. Calling them French Bulldogs, they returned to America and quickly established the first breed club.

This is a playful, comical, affectionate little dog. With proper socialization, they'll enjoy and enthusiastically greet strangers and other dogs. A few minutes of obedience practice daily will keep your tenacious little bulldog behaving like a wonderful family pet.

French bulldogs can be brindle, tan or white with brindle patches, or fawn. Adults weigh 19 to 28 pounds and live up to 12 years. They have muscular bodies, a large square head, a flat nose, and large bat-shaped ears that add to their comical appearance. Grooming requirements are minimal. Wrinkly skin folds should be kept clean and dry.

Health and genetic concerns associated with French bulldogs include spinal disorders, joint diseases, heart disease, eye problems. The Canine Eye Registration Foundation screens parent dogs to reduce incidence of eye problems. Many breeders x-ray the parent dogs before breeding to check for potential problems with patellar luxation and spinal disorders.

This little dog with a flat face CAN NOT live outdoors. With their compromised breathing they can't regulate their body temperature efficiently. They love neighborhood walks but can't tolerate long hikes. They're prone to heat stroke so don't walk your puppy during the heat of the day. Because of their top heavy body shape, most can't swim. Never leave this dog unattended around water.

Some drool and slobber. Most wheeze and snore. Extra weight adds to respiratory problems. French bulldogs are playful but can't tolerate long walks or hot weather.
