Pet Emergency Aid Supplies

By Eric Holm

In planning for the unexpected it is essential that you consider an emergency plan for your family. For example if disaster strikes then have you considered the safest route from the building or the supplies that you will need? You will also need to plan for the furry friends, your pets, who are also part of the family.

Therefore it is crucial that you plan for an emergency situation and make sure that your family pet and companion has a chance of survival, just like the rest of the family. So what kinds of things can you do to prepare a first aid kit for your pet?

Firstly, you need to think about the basics. Essential items are food and water and you should aim to have at least a three day supply both for your family and for your pet. This should include any snacks or treats which could act as a possible distraction and help to calm your pet down. Animals are unpredictable and do not have the same skills of comprehending the situation. They may also be extra sensitive and rely on instincts and so it is necessary to have something to calm them, but also to contain them so that you can all evacuate safely. They may react aggressively or they may cower. Alternatively they may try to run away in panic. Therefore you will need to pack items depending on the needs of the animal, such as a leash, a pet carrier, name tags and lighted collars which can all be the difference between life and death for your pet.

Other items to pack in the pet first aid kit, along with the essentials of food and water are snacks and a leash so you can keep your pet close by. There may be situations when you need to control their movements, particularly in crowded evacuation centers and so a leash and also poop bags are an essential. Remember that there may also be sanitation issues with bringing a pet into centers such as these and so you also may need to have a back up plan for sheltering your pet. A pet carrier could be a lifeline for your pet if this is the case and your pet needs to stay outside of the building.

A good pet first aid kit and a three day supply of food and water are really important if you treat your pet as a member of your family. You will be glad you prepared in advance.
