The animal is available in a wide range of colors, sizes, coat lengths, and head shapes among several other features. Dallas has many breeders who give special attention to the dogs they raise to ensure that they are of high quality.

There is a lot of mystery surrounding the origin of Chihuahuas and their history is just one big puzzle. Regardless of these, it has been shown by both forklore and archeological findings the breed originated from Mexico. The belief that this breed originated from Techichi is one of the most popular theories about its origin. The Toltec civilization of Mexico is known for favoring the Techichi as a companion dog. No records exist about the Techichi beyond the ninth century.

There are only two varieties of a Chihuahua, that is, the Long Coat and the Smooth Coat. The two varieties have their own special attractions and some Kennel Clubs consider them to be two separate breeds. In fact, the puppies that result from mating the two varieties are not considered legible for KC registration.

Both long coat as well as smooth coat variants can further be classified into deer heads and apple heads. Deer heads have close-set eyes, round heads, relatively shorter ears, and shorter legs. Conversely, deer heads come with longer and slenderer legs, bigger ears, wide-set eyes, and heads that are flat-topped. The popularity of deer heads peaked in the mid years of the twentieth century. Today, apple head conformation is the one specified by many registries.

How high a chihuahua should be is usually not specified by breed standards. Breed standards only specify overall proportions and weight. However, in general, the height ranges between 15 cm and 23 cm. Some attain the height of between 30 cm and 38 cm. The weight of these dogs is not supposed to exceed 2.7 kg according to conformation standards in the United States and the UK.

Chihuahuas are available in almost any color combination, ranging from splashed or marked to solid. Colors available range from solid white to solid black, sabled, spotted and several other color patterns. Color combinations have a very high level of variation. Some of the commonest colors are brown, cream, mixed, brown, black, white, chocolate, fawn, and red. None of the patterns or colors is often considered more valuable than others.

Temperament of an individual is highly dependent on the temperament of the parents and grandparents. These dogs attack people and other animals easily, which makes them unsuitable for homes that have small children. They tend to be fiercely loyal to one specific person. In some situations, they may become over-protective of the individual when they are around other people or animals.

Chihuahuas are not good at coexisting with other dog breeds. They prefer staying with other Chihuahuas instead of other breeds. One can minimize some of these extreme traits by starting the socialization process while the chihuahua is still young. The dog should only be left to kids that are 13 years and above because they to be aggressive.
