What To Know When Seeking Cavachons For Adoption

By Catherine Cook

When deciding to adopt a new dog, many people tend to choose a breed based primarily on its looks. However, it is equally important to take into account the primary characteristics for which each type of pooch is known. Before considering Cavachons for adoption, it would be in one's best interest to know as much about these pups as possible, to make sure they are a good fit for one's lifestyle.

Perhaps the first thing interested persons should realize is that these dogs will not be eligible for showing in AKC sponsored events. This is because the Cavachon is considered to be a designer breed - which means that is the result of the crossing of two different pure breeds. These dogs were created with the intention of combining the most desirable traits found in the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the Bichon Frise.

This breed is rather difficult to obtain and can be quite a substantial investment. As most of these dogs are first generation - meaning that they are directly descended from one of each of the parent breeds - people are often required to sit on waiting list for long periods of time. While it is possible to get second generation litters, the quality of such offspring is often degraded.

These are small dogs belonging to the Toy breed category. When fully grown, they typically reach no more than 13 inches in height, and weigh between 12 and 18 pounds. This makes them ideal for individuals who may live in small homes or apartments.

The highest quality pups are going to exhibit the most desirable characteristics shared by both parent breeds. This most commonly means having soft and silky fur, a shorter snout, and extremely expressive large eyes. They are most desired because of their very adorable appearance.

Before adopting one of these dogs a person should be advised of the amount of grooming that will be required. The fur is considered hypoallergenic because it does not shed much at all, however it does grow a bit fast and can get dirty and matted rather easily. These pups will need to be brushed regularly and trimmed up frequently.

Before bringing a Cavachon into the home, a person needs to make sure that they have ample time to dedicate to giving it plenty of attention and exercise. Although typically well-behaved, they do form a very close bond with their humans and can become a bit anxious when separated from them. For the best results, it is highly recommended that socialization start as a puppy and obedience training begin as early as possible with follow-through being consistent.

Since there is no official listing of reputable Cavachon breeders, a person will need to be very selective and cautious when seeking out one from which to adopt a puppy. The most reliable way to find the best provider is by talking with other people who own this breed and getting their feedback. As this is a rather sizable investment, take the time to ask relevant questions about the experience of each breeder and the way their dogs are treated, before making a commitment.
