By Michelle Robinson

Then your new bunny will settle in and will rapidly grow to become a fantastic pet for you and your family.

If you have owned a rabbit in the past you know that they can be loving and playful companions. If you have not had one and are worried that they will be messy you need to know that they can be litter trained. With work, a good reward system your bunny can be taught to use only one area of it's cage or pen to go to the washroom. Once you know your rabbit will not urinate all over your floor you may be more willing to let your bunny roam free.

Holland lops are quite small and are actually one of the smallest breeds of bunny around. Their normal top weight is about three and a half pounds for a purebred bunny. Some lops end up getting crossed with other breeds and their offspring can end up being larger than expected. Their fur is soft and fluffy but it is not as long as the fur that some rabbits have.

Part of having a healthy, happy rabbit is knowing what is good for it to eat. Rabbits tend to be healthiest when they have a good diet of pellets. Hay will add much needed fiber and certain fruits and vegetables will give your companion valuable vitamins and minerals that it will need for optimal health.

A large pen is a great thing for your rabbit regardless of how large or small your bunny may be. A cage that you can buy in a pet shop will not usually have enough room in it for your bunny to be comfortable especially if it is not allowed to roam around your home most of the time.

You may be tempted to visit a breeder to get your bunny but this may not always be the best idea. There are many rabbits in rescues and animal shelters that are in need of homes. If you are concerned about getting a rabbit that you think is small and then having it grow to a much larger size you might want to think about adopting an adult that is fully grown.

Rabbits have special health needs. They need to have a constant supply of food and fresh water. If you think your bunny is not completely healthy it can be a good idea for you to get them checked over by a doctor. A rabbit's health can decline rapidly so prompt medical attention is important.

When you get your new bunny home it is important to give it time to acclimate. Don't try and pick your bunny up until it knows you. Give it time to sniff you and get used to your scent. Once it trusts you it may become affectionate but this may take a while. Then you will likely have a loving pet to enjoy for years to come.
