Go for young animals that will give many years of production to cater for the investment you have made. Younger animals have a long, productive life compared to older ones. You may choose large females that will come into the maturation earlier hence breed early. They should have 70% weight of a mature doe. Buy does at least 5 months old. Choose animals that are free of diseases. In order to be truly functional, all the goats must have sounds feet and legs. When properly trimmed to remove any excess toe or undergrowth the foot should still appear to be relatively large. This will enable the animal to walk with ease. The toes should be of equal size to insure equal distribution of body weight.

You need to go for an animal that walks with ease while grazing. Any sign of the goat feeding while kneeling with its forelimbs is a sign of foot rot disease. The fore and rear flanks should be relatively deep, giving a somewhat square shape to the area between the shoulder and the rear leg.

Both the rear and front legs should be on the corner of the body while standing or walking. It should not walk with difficulty. All legs, joints should be free of any stiffness that restricts movement. Look for signs of foot rot disease, where the goat will grazes while kneeling or lying down. Avoid animals that are too fat or too thin, such goats have a poor fertility rate.

Regardless of their condition, goats should appear alert and strong with good appetite. You should be keen to observe any symptoms of ill health. The most conspicuous is lameness. It should not show any signs of parasite infestation. It is not a good idea to select a goat that has loss of hair and presence of external parasites.Such a breed will be of poor quality.

Check udder for any potential infection. One of the first things you check on a doe is her teat structure. Ideally, a doe will have two clean teats. Some goats will have more teats on one or both sides. Clip any extra teat. It may be a source of infection. In addition, go for goats with multiple births.

Choose a breed with a large udder and two big teats. A goat with extra teats is not good for breeding. Also, the teats should not be cracked. A swollen udder might be a source of infection by bacteria. It is important to ensure that the udder of the goat is soft and not hard to touch. This will ensure the kids will suckle appropriately.
