This breed of course is one that originates from England. It was however, originally bred from an Asian mastiff line to enable it to fight in the arena with bulls. Thus since it was breed for this purpose it had inherited the name bulldog. The sport that it was bred for was outlawed in the 19th century, but the breed remained. The modern day bulldog that we are all familiar with today exhibits a much different temperament altogether when compared to its predecessors.

Despite its intimidating looks, the breed is considered to be among the gentlest of canine breeds. It has been found to be very affectionate and gentle with children, whilst maintaining its dominating and dependable attitude as a guard dog. The bulldog requires a strong owner who will not allow it to fall into alpha dog behavior. It must be made to feel it is part of a pack and not leading it. It is also not recommended that they be kept with other dogs as they can sometimes become combative.

Small spaces are not a major problem with this dog. It can actually be classified as an indoor breed. It can be quite comfortable with long periods of inactivity but it is really recommended that it be taken out for a brisk walk at least once a day. This daily walk should compensate for the innate canine instinct to migrate.

If you live in a tropical climate, this dog is not for you as it has trouble cooling off when it is hot. It cannot also live in very cold weather as it chills easily. The best climate for the bulldog is a temperate one.

You will be challenged in the medical complications department when getting this dog. The breed is prone to skin complications and flatulence when quite young, and as it gets older, it will suffer from poor eyesight and hip and knee problems. Some, but not all, have small windpipes, which will give it breathing problems.

As the breed is an average shedder, and having a short haired coat that is fine and smooth, it is thus quite easy to groom. Always make sure that its face is wiped with a damp cloth regularly if not daily, especially taking care to clean inside the wrinkles.

There are definitely other factor to consider when thinking of getting and owning this breed. This article actually has covered some good information that may be of use to you. Always try to get as much information always, especially when taking on a new endeavor, such as taking on and taking care of a new pet.
