Maltese Training to Treat Barking Issue

By Clare Rosewood

Maltese training is usually a stressful task not just because of their playful character but also because their small size and expressive appearance can make it easy for them to conquer anyone's heart consequently letting them escape from anything. But can there be more challenging than having a small pet with behavior problem like excessive barking?

Based on some surveys, the maltese is the most dumped dog in Australia and Korea citing this breed's tendency to bark excessively. While it's certainly hard to bear noise caused by a barking dog, the figure of dogs being dumped wouldn't increase only if owners are know what to do to handle the scenario.

We are all aware that barking could not completely be eliminated since it's every dog's natural response to. The easiest method to handle the issue is to train the dog as to when is the proper time to bark and how to stop barking on command. If your dog barks on vehicles or people including the mailman, passersby and children laughing, then you might have not included socialization during maltese training. Help him associate these things with something positive by making every encounter enjoyable. Rewarding him with treats or praise every time he remains calm when a car or a screaming child is around can do the trick.

A dog may also bark if he has separation anxiety or if he is uncomfortable of his condition. Staying outside although the temperature is blazing hot or freezing cold is certainly uncomfortable to dogs just as much as it is to humans. It would be best to move his crate or bed to a snug and secure area where family members stay most of the time.

Ask assistance from someone to train him to bark on command. Then ask your assistant to knock at the door or other hard surface but prior to that, say "speak". If he barks, reward him with treat or praise until he learns to associate the command with the action. If he figured out the concept that he should remain silent after the treat, say "quiet" or some other command with equivalent meaning.

Maltese training is one certain way to have a well mannered pet everyone loves to be around. If every owner train their pet appropriately, for sure it will help reduce the number of maltese being abandoned.
