Pet Survival Kits For Safety's Sake

By Faye Hunter

Animal lovers concerned with the safety of their furry friends will want to consider the advantages of pet survival kits. Unexpected events are easier to overcome if preparations are in place. The probability of a positive outcome increases with a little prior planning.

There are two ways to approach this. All inclusive ready made kits can be purchased online or at the local pet supply store. These are also sources for obtaining the elements of a do it yourself kit. Few projects more rewarding than ensuring the safety of the family dog or cat.

There are basic requirements for a good survival kit be it a purchase or a project. It is best to make a comprehensive list to avoid being unprepared in an emergency. Keep in mind the individual animal and anticipate its needs.

All living creatures need food and water and pets are no exception. Look for packaged food with a five year shelf life. It is available for both dogs and cats. If canned food is preferred make sure to pack a can opener. Water is also essential and comes in small boxes especially for pets. Treats may seem unimportant but under stress an animal might need some temptation to eat. A set of bowls completes the picture. If space is an issue opt for folding types.

Collars and leashes may seem obvious but prepare for the conditions that may occur in a crisis. When the electricity is out the right kind of restraints can save a pet's life. At the least have products constructed with reflective materials. Better yet purchase an illuminated lead. They are readily available on the market and enhance visibility. One might also consider a life vest if conditions warrant it.

All living creatures need respite for the chaos that ensues in a crisis. The family pet is no exception. Small dogs and cats will need a carrier roomy enough for some freedom of movement. Be sure there is adequate space. A familiar blanket and a favorite toy provide comfort and reassurance especially if the animal can smell the familiar scent of its owner. Larger dogs require larger options and one that might be unfamiliar to some is an actual tent for pups. This set up may require one to utilize a standard chain and stake tie up for restraining purposes. Whatever type of shelter one chooses be sure to include adequate tools for waste disposal including plenty of plastic bags.

Last but not least is a good well-stocked first aid kit. Most people probably already have one as the basic ingredients are the same as the one in the family medicine cabinet. Familiar items such as alcohol swabs, antibiotic cream, gloves, gauze and tape are imperative. Tweezers and cold packs are also handy as are tongue depressors when a splint is indicated.

Pet survival kits are only good as the effort put into them. Find the right container in which to store all the elements gathered for this purpose. Many prefabricated kits are packaged in five gallon buckets. Use what is appropriate but keep in mind that it must be easy to move at a moment's notice. Common senses dictates that vaccination records be kept in the same place but a recent picture will help in identifying a lost animal. Pet ownership implies responsibility. Keep them safe.
