By Stacey Massey

There are different eating habits as displayed by cats depending on their age, breed and environment. When the cat wont eat, there arises a problem that requires special attention. Only by involving a vet is one able to identify the real issue and the best way to solve it. A solution should be found urgently because delays have been known to have devastating consequences.

The varied causes for loss of appetite require the expert interpretation of a vet. It is recommended that action be taken as fast as possible to avoid complications or deteriorating the health of your pet. Some of the diseases that one should watch out for include intestinal disorders, cancers, pancreatitis and kidney failure. The possibility of an oral or tooth issues should not be ruled out.

A recent vaccination could cause the pet to exhibit similar behavior. It is possible for the feline to respond to the shot by displaying such side effects. This behavior is mostly mild and for a while though some could be life threatening. It should be communicated to the vet who will establish whether it is a normal reaction.

Change in environment like relocation is another possible cause for reduced appetite. The pet displays irritability and changed behavior in case the environment changes or after a trip. This is for both plane and car travels of whichever distance. Nausea is also common in such situations.

The absence of any physical illness could be a pointer to deeper issues. They relate to either anxiety or depression. Sensitive cats could experience problems with changes in the surrounding or even the routine. The changes affect its emotional balance causing problems with feeding and play.

Not all breeds display a similar feeding habit. It is natural to find one that is poor in feeding even in the absence of physical injury or emotional issues. It is therefore necessary to understand the breed you are dealing with and not compare its mannerisms with any other.

Other changes that affect the behavior of cats include introduction of a new brand of food. It might take time for the feline to adapt to the new foods and it might as well reject the food totally. You should observe the changes keenly since they point at the possible cause. The owner should try feeding the pet with warm food since cats are naturally sensitive. Cats are known to love such foods as sardine and tuna because of their strong smell.

It is recommended that you try several foods before making the conclusion that it has lost appetite. Maintaining a regular feeding routine is another consideration. A clean feeding environment is a necessity considering the nature of cats. Check if the nostrils are blocked or dirty and try feeding using hands.

The professional diagnosis when the cat wont eat is necessary to ensure that the prescription suggested solves the problems once and for all. With reasons varying from physical to psychological and environmental, the solutions vary. The presence of foreign bodies in the digestive system and issues relating to age should not be ruled out.
