Wally Conran crossed a Poodle and a Lab but of the first 31 puppies, only a handful were hypoallergenic. But 29 of the 31 passed service dog training, a phenomenal success rate.
Two research centers, Tegan Park and Rutland Manor, were established to perfect the breed. To stabilize coat types and temperament, the Irish Water Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, and American Spaniel were added to the lineage of early generations. Breeding was done to strict standards with detailed documentation. All true Australian Labradoodles trace back to these 2 lines.
Both the Australian Labradoodle Association (ALA), and the International Labradoodle Association (ILC) maintain large registries for both the American and Australian Labradoodles. Parent stock should be DNA tested for progressive retinal atrophy before breeding. In their old age, Australian Labradoodles may develop hip dysplasia or patella disorder (slipped kneecap). Addison's disease is the major health problem. There's no test and onset occurs later in life after several generations have been bred. Discuss this risk with your breeder.
Wool is the superior hypoallergenic coat type, soft and non shedding. Fleece is non to low shedding, silky, wavy or curly. Puppies with hair should not be kept in the breeding line as they're not allergy friendly. Grooming needs are minimal. Brush weekly with a slicker brush, and a visit to the groomers 3-4 times a year for a trim or haircut. Clean ears weekly to avoid infections.
