Finding The Best Dog Portraits Pencil Drawings

By Karina Frost

Many times our dogs can seem like your best friends in the world. They help fill the empty space left behind when your kids leave for college or move to their own homes. What better way to memorialize them than by commissioning an artist to create dog portraits pencil drawings to display in your homes or wallets. With a little research online you can have a permanent reminder of the pet you treasure and love.

Many owners consider the show dogs that are so well publicized as the perfect standard to judge an animal but most peoples dogs are mixed breeds. The family pet is more than worthy of having a portrait done by an artist and many times far more interesting than some thoroughbreds. Either way their owners have a tendency to dote on them and want to remember them for a long time.

Using graphite pencils for pet portraits offers the artist a wide range of advantages. The pencils come in two ranges of texture that add to the contrasting of colors and shading. The hard light graphite is best for the fine lines needed around the eyes and for other details such as expression. The soft darker graphite pencils are best for shading and color variance in black and white pictures.

As an addition to the design of a portrait many artists will incorporate charcoal pencils into their drawing. This adds depth and contrast to the finished picture. Used in combination with the graphite pencils the effect becomes more realistic and can be as exacting and precise as some paintings.

Colored pencils can also be used when drawing a dogs picture. The added feature of color to the portrait works well for those dogs that have multiple colors in their coats. Lighter colored animals have a more realistic appearance when colored pencils are used. Some artists add pastels to give the colors a deeper more personal appearance.

Most artists who can draw a portrait are skilled in several different mediums. Graphite pencils can be the most affordable for most people. The artist may restrict the size for a drawing to nine by eleven inches but exceptions to this rule can generally be negotiated if you have enough high quality photographs for examples.

Most of the artists found on the internet will provide pages of examples for potential customers to review. They will show several pieces of each medium they work in and provide you with a list of the things they will need to create one for you. Most request several photographs of the dog you would like drawn and they will help you by suggesting methods of getting the dog to pose and where to get the best results.

The difference between a photograph of your dog and a hand drawn portrait can be immeasurable. A portrait is something that you may treasure for a lifetime.
