Learning The Basics of Alpaca Farming

By Alan Stables

Before going into the business of alpaca farming it is necessary to do research on the venture as would be done for other business ventures. The alpaca is from the camelid family and is a native of South America countries. Around 20 years ago they were imported into the United States.

Despite the fact that alpacas do not require a great amount of grazing land and that they are by nature they are very docile, before beginning farming there are a number of things that need to be considered. People want to farm alpacas for a variety of different reasons and whatever that reason is it could be significant.

Their requirements would be quite different from the farmers who are interested in farming for breeding stock purposes, or farming for production of high quality fiber to be used on the farm for item production or sold on a large scale as fiber, yarn, or finished products.

Someone thinking about starting an alpaca farm will need to have some financial backup as it is not a business that will make money overnight. Before a male can be used for the purpose of breeding he needs to be a minimum of three years of age. While the female becomes sexually mature between 12 - 18 months old, after being bred she will not give birth for around 370 days. This explains the reason for financial backup.

The actual alpacas can be quite expensive, being thousands of dollars each, depending on their breeding, health, age, fiber quality, and bloodline. Since this is the largest expense, researching reputable breeders to buy the original stock is imperative.

Unless the farmer has the proper amount of start up capital on their own, a business loan or gathering investors may be options. Preparation of a business plan will require additional research but can aid in securing business partners, small business loans, or determine whether the risk is viable at all.

Good living conditions are a must for alpacas and this must be of the highest priority for starting an alpaca farm. As these animals originally come from the cold areas of the Andes Mountains, they are more used to the cold weather. Their living accommodation should have air conditioning installed. A constant drinking water supply is another requirement as this is needed to keep the alpacas in a healthy condition.

Whether it is as a hobby or a breeding business, just to have these animals on your property and watching them grow will be very rewarding. It takes a great many years to learn all the processes of alpaca farming and this needs to be considered.

Rabbit breeding requires a basic understanding of the animal and their reproduction cycles. Rabbits are an excellent choice to produce a steady source of income and food. This is because rabbits require small use of resources to have high outcomes when compared to traditional livestock.
