By Daniel Turbin

Plants and Algae are sometimes overlooked when planning custom aquariums yet they fulfill many important functions. Plants function as water conditioners, a source of food and being matter of beauty. They also offer a spawning place if you do wish to breed the fish. The most of those plants has roots and thus require somewhere suitable for their roots to grow up.

They also have to be nourished as the regular aquarium gravel generally lacks the required minerals. But don't head out to your garden shed except you know what you are doing. If you're a newbie stick to the commercial instead of home grown types of plant food. Or else you're in risk of upsetting the natural balance of the aquarium and killing the fish.

If you've freshwater custom aquariums you won't want algae growing in there. Overfeeding and excessive light are 2 of the key culprits if you have problems with algae. You can combat any problems by feeding the fish less, introducing more green plants to help block out the light and possibly also adding some species of fish that feed on this material.

If you have marine custom aquariums you will want the algae to grow. Marine fish sometimes use it as a source of food but it's also very useful at breaking down the nitrogenous compounds in the water than arise from fish waste. When considering custom aquarium design, you should take into account the location or space that is provided for your aquarium. Aside from budget, the space available will greatly contribute to the size and form of your aquarium and the features that it can house without congesting the tank.
