The Importance of Dog Obedience Training

By Matt McGrath

Well-behaved dogs are a pleasure to be around and fun to own. Most well-behaved dogs are the ones who have been through obedience training. As a reliable dog-owner it is up to you to make sure that your dog is properly trained in obedience. An untrained dog is difficult to be around and causes many difficulties for their owners.

A well-trained dog requiresless restrictions and will not create embarrassment for his owner. In fact, training a dog properly will pay off in many ways. A dog that has had quite a bit of dog obedience training is able to have less confinement, will always cooperate with neighbors and friends and will not create awkwardness for his owner. Proper training of a dog will always reflect well upon the owner.

Excessive barking, inappropriate jumping and other displeasing habits of a poorly trained dog are annoying for the owner and can be frightening for visitors. After all a visitor doesn't know your dog and may not know how to deal with his inappropriate behavior.

If you take your dog out to a public place you are much more likely to be accepted if your dog is well-mannered. Strangers, friends and family all react to you in a more welcoming manner with a well-mannered and appropriately trained dog. It is much easier for everyone if your dog has good manners and is well-behaved.

As a conscientious dog owner you need to take care of your dog obedience training. Training a dog can strengthen the bond between the dog and his owner. Training a dog builds mutual respect, communication, and understanding and makes it clear to your dog that as his master and owner you are the "alpha dog". If your dog considers you to be the leader you will avoid many problems especially if your dog is a high strung and rambunctious by nature.

A dog that has completed dog obedience training and answers easily to voice commands is a safer dog. If your dog finds himself in a dangerous situation such as being on a high traffic street, if you can get him to respond quickly to your commands and return to you to out of harm's way you could avoid many tragedies. Also if a gate is accidently left open and your dog leaves your yard you will be able to immediately and effectively bring him back home to you saving you time, energy and frustration.

It is nice to have the ease of knowing that your dog is reliable and dependable around children. This can even be a liability issue and it is very important. Good manners, proper behavior in a crowd and dependability are important aspects that your dog will gain with the appropriate obedience training.

You will enjoy owning your dog much more if you take the time, energy and money to appropriately train your dog. Both you and your dog will be happier.
