Tips for Jack Russell Training

By Andyl Hannerl

The bright eyes and the scruffy face of the Jack Russell terrier is what makes them one of the popular choices for pets and are also a popular choice in television and movies. The only disadvantage that you may have with a Jack Russell terrier if he is not well trained is his high and mighty attitude, thinking that he should run the household and not you.

If you have decided that this breed is the right pet for you, it will be important to commit to plenty of Jack Russell training to ensure your dog accepts you as the head of the house.

Training should begin the day the puppy comes home from the breeder and should continue until the dog learns to obey basic commands and treat his family members with respect. Check out these tips for Jack Russell training that will ensure your dog is a delight to your family.

Consistent Rules

The Jack Russell terrier is an extremely intelligent animal, but the attitude that goes along with the "smarts" can sometimes be a setback in Jack Russell training. These dogs sometimes rebel against their owner's authority, even after it appears that they have sufficiently learned the rules of the house. That's why it is so important to remain consistent with your terrier, giving him a firm scolding when he breaks the rules or plenty of praise when he obeys your commands.

Remember that the house rules should be consistent at all times to keep your dog in his position. And yes, you will need a lot of time and tolerance in training them, but they will eventually surrender to your authority.

Natural Instincts

This type of breed has the instincts to hunt. And there will be times that if they see your family cat they will be provoked to attack it. There will also be times that he will take off his yard if he smells something interesting. These are things that are not trainable and will need the owners precautionary measures to keep them in control. This would mean keeping your dog on a leash when walking them and making sure that they are very confined when at home or when they are left on the yard.

The Jack Russell terriers are know to be diggers as well and it would be best if you check the perimeters of your yard from time to time to ensure that your pup is not creating an escape route. It would not be a good idea to have your Jack Russell pet in the same house as small pets like gerbils or cats as your dog may or may not decide to hunt your other pets.

Although Jack Russell training may take more patience and time than training other breed of dogs, you will be sure to have great rewards after. These terriers are loaded with great personality, intellect and are super loyal to their owners and with proper training, they will surely delight and entertain your family for a long time.
