Ways You Can Stop Your Dog From Licking

By Andyl Hannerl

While dog licking might be considered by some dog owners as a way dog shows them affection, it can be quite annoying when there are guests visiting and the dog wants to greet them with by licking them over and over again.

Even though dog licking is not something that is as dangerous as jumping or aggression, it is still not an appropriate behavior for a dog. It might also cause you embarrassment and your guest might feel uncomfortable in the presence of an over friendly licking dog.

Tips

Here is a very important point that you should take note. And that is consistency. Consistency should start at the very beginning, when your dog is still a puppy. If you want your dog to behave towards other people in a certain manner, then you should teach your dog to behave towards you in the same way.

Let us look at an example. Let say you allow your dog to lick you on your hands and face. Your dog will not be able to understand why it is not allowed to lick other people on their hands and face. Similarly, if you allow your dog to jump on you, your dog will not be able to understand why it is wrong for him to jump on other people. When it comes to any form of dog training, consistency is the key. You have to show your dog what is the appropriate behavior and then reinforce it on a consistent basis.

Although as a dog owner, you will feel wonderful that your dog is licking you when you arrive home, showering you with excitement and a whole lot of attention, there are many other ways that are more appropriate for your dog to show you attention and excitement other than licking. 1 simple way to stop your dog from licking you is to turn away each time he tries to lick you.

The owner should not give the dog eye contact and should turn away from the dog until the dog stops trying to lick him. Once the dog has calmed down, then the owner can give the dog attention and praise for the proper behavior. If the dog has a tendency to lick the person's hand, the owner should stop dog licking by pulling the hand away and turn away from the dog, refusing to give eye contact until the dog calms down.

When you reinforce the appropriate behavior, it will also train your dog not to lick other people when they are coming into your house. Due to the fact that your dog knows he will not gain any of your attention through licking, he will not try to lick your guests.

You may also want to tell your visitors what they should do if they are being licked by your dog. This will also reinforce the same behavior that you as the owner used to stop the problems of dog licking.

Hi Wen,

Apologize for the late reply.

Yes, Casey Sheds hair during bath time. During normal time, its normal hair shed, not excessive.

Also, diets plays an important role.. nothing too salty or with preservative.

Try giving them fresh home cook meals.

Also from our experience, fish oil, flax seed & also fruits helps with their fur / hair and immune system.

Lastly, use mild dog shampoo ... sometimes baby shampoo is good
