The Necessary Equipment You'll Want For Your Brand New Puppy

By Katheryn Becker

It is exciting to get a new puppy but before he comes home you will need to get a few things to help you to coach him to be a respected member of your family. It is easier to have the stuff you will need on hand than to try to get them afterward.

If you go to the pet store you will see that there are lots of dog products that you can buy. Some of these are valuable to have and others are just a waste of cash.

One of the most valuable things that you will need when you get a new puppy is a crate. Dogs like to have a hideout that is their own space. Your training will go better if you use a crate. Make sure that you get one that is the right size for your puppy. You may want to have two in case you want one for the car.

Next you will need a good quality collar and a leash. Get one collar that fits well and set aside any special training collars till later when you know better what you will need. A retractable six-foot leash that feels comfy to you when you hold it is also vital.

Any dietetic changes should be made little by little so try to find out what type of food your puppy is used to eating. Get enough of that for at least a few weeks. If you want to change it later, do it gradually. A stainless steel food and water dish combo is also crucial.

For training purposes, you will need some type of aversive, or something that you can use do dissuade bad behavior. An aversive is something that your dog does not like and will work to stay away from but something that will not hurt him. A clicker that makes a noise or a squirt bottle will work as an aversive. You will also need some soft treats that you can use as a reward in training.

Young puppies need to chew until they get a tad larger so you will want to have some chew toys on hand. Start out with just a few until you know what your puppy likes. Same with other toys do not load up on toys until you know your puppy's character.

The first few days after you bring your puppy home will be easier if you have the things that you need on hand. You will want to start training without delay so it will be easier if you are equipped.
