An Explanation Of The Effectiveness Of Pet Shock Collars

By Robbie Johnston

You may be creeped out by pet shock collars, but believe it or not, these tools really are safe. They are also effective as a way of training a pet. If you are trying to impact your pet's worst behaviors, you may want to consider it.

Before you buy a shock collar, there are some things you should take into account.

The way shock collars work is they give your pet a small electric shock whenever it senses that the animal's vocal chords are vibrating at a high enough level. The level of electricity is not dangerous, merely corrective.

People compare the feeling of the shock to the shock one gets from static electricity or from a small battery. It is fairly uncomfortable, but advocates insist it isn't actually painful and it is very short term.

You should know what size of collar to buy before you buy it. Use a tape measure to get an accurate measurement of your animal's neck. If you don't have one of those, get a string or ribbon and wrap it once around the animal's neck. Then measure that length with a ruler. Collars generally come in three sizes: Small, medium and large.

Upon receiving your new shock collar, you should begin its use at its lowest level. Most shock collars have a whole range of settings available. If you begin at the lowest level, you can increase it as necessary. If your pet doesn't respond with it at its lowest level, increase it gradually until you get the desired reaction.

Don't consider the shock collar to be a permanent accessory for your pet. Use it only as long as it is necessary, that is, until your pet behaves the way you want.

Your pet will always associate the target bad behaviors with the unpleasantness of the shock collar. If the animal backtracks into bad behavior, you can reinstate the use of the collar as long as necessary.
