Train Your Old Dog- New Tricks And Commands You Can Teach Your Old Dog

By Stan Beck

Reinvent your Old Dog: Teach it New Tricks

"You can't teach an old dog new tricks." This is a maxim that people love to tell when they refer to changes that involve practices, procedures and habits. It is also a popular belief that old dogs are difficult to teach. This hypothesis has some truth in it but teaching old dogs new tricks is actually possible. It takes 15 minutes of training per day for 15 consecutive days to change an old dog's state of mind, says "The Animal Planet." It also gave the assurance that by following this regimen, your dog will already learn to sit, roll over and other tricks.

Now you already have the idea that training an old dog can actually be done, but it needs a positive attitude to make this happen. You should give your dog all the time it needs to learn. It may be able to understand your instruction easily, or it may find your training difficult to do. Whatever may be the scenario, you should always put into consideration your dog's period of adjustment and your own effort that you put into the training.

Training Your Old Dog

Teaching an old dog new tricks mean you should also recognize its previous training before embarking on the changes that you want to inject. After a day's work, you need to emphasize to the dog that you are pleased with its job by giving it plenty of treats and physical rewards. Do it subtly and nicely. The attempt to change should not be made in a way that confuses your dog. Do it in little steps.

Always keep in mind that training an old dog involves a change on its established behaviors. The training should be consistent and regularly done in order to make the results visible.

When you train your old dog, you should consider its individuality, not just your being the alpha leader or its master. Don't be too harsh on your pet and be easy in dealing with it. Create a bond that will help your training more of an enjoyment rather than a task.

Your dog only responds to a situation you create. The way your dog responds is the exact measure of how you influenced it with your training. Your dog's learning actually depends on your motivation and persistence or style, perhaps. So if you have an old dog that needs additional skills or behavior improvement, it is not at all too late.

For humans, old habits are hard to break, as a popular song goes, but for old dogs, new tricks are not impossible to learn.
