Canines are great pets to have and for the most part, we all enjoy the fun and carefree times with them. However, as responsible pet owners, we must be aware of common dog diseases that may cause discomfort and even death to our dogs when left untreated for long. Here are some dog diseases and symptoms to watch out for.

A common ailment that dogs, especially puppies, are susceptible to is heartworm. Heartworms are parasitic worms that are usually caused by mosquitoes and attacks the vital organs of the dog. When undetected and left untreated, the infected heart will progress to congestive heart failure. Observe the canine for cough and unusual signs of tiredness.

Parvovirus attacks the intestines of the canine and is considered one of the most fatal and common dog diseases for them to have. Dogs that catch this are usually those that are often in dirty and unsanitary places. Virus enters their system through fecal matter and its symptoms manifest quickly. If the canine have a decreased appetite, is vomiting, has severe bloody diarrhea and is lethargic, have him checked immediately. Parvovirus is a dangerous and fast acting disease which can cause death within a few days of contamination.

Another deadly disease caused by unsanitary living condition is distemper. It has no cure and canines have a fifty percent chance of survival when they are infected. Symptoms of distemper include chest congestion, coughing, severe diarrhea and discharge from the canine's eyes and nose.

Rabies is a viral disease associated often with dogs even though other animals like raccoons, cats and bats also carry this disease. The nervous system of the dog breaks down when they become infected with rabies. First, the dog will have fever and its eyes will have slower reflexes. Afterward, they will display alarming and aggressive behavior. Eventually this will lead to the last stage which is the ultimate failure of the canine's motor abilities. Euthanize the animal immediately when they have rabies as others can easily be infected through contaminated saliva.

Bloat is a dog disease that happens when the canine overeats or consumes his food too fast. The animal's stomach becomes twisted and this traps gas as well as cuts off the blood supply needed. This is really painful for the dog and will frequently lead to a fast death. Be attentive during mealtimes that your dog doesn't eat too quickly or too much at once. Some indicators of this disease are dry heaving, restlessness and depression.

Studies suggest that many of our dogs are prone to obesity. While obesity is not terminal in itself, it will prove to be a major detriment in their health. Obese dogs suffer more complications and will be a higher risk for surgery. Their vital organs will also have undue stress on them.
