How To Control Your Dog's Habit Of Jumping On Your Visitors

By Hanson Buell

Having a dog that keeps on snapping and jumping at you and any other visitor will be a hard nut to crack if nothing is done. You should be looking for a solution in case you are not already doing so. There are three ways forward.

One, you could try ignoring the dog when it does that. Act as if it is not there. What the dog will be worried about is that it is not getting the attention it is busy trying to get from you. Keep doing this every time it jumps at you.

You should instead give the dog an all out showering of attention and care when he is seated down and maintaining calm

The second technique is a remedy if the first one is not working. It involves giving the dog a good knee bump. Yes! The situation calls for more aggressiveness from you.

These occasional bumps are irritating to the dog and after a while, it acts like a taste of his own medicine. He will resolve to sit calm again and that will lead you to praise again.

Take extra caution if the dog is a young one. You should not use your knee if he is a young pup. Use your ankle instead and make sure that you discourage the dog from jumping.

The third trick in the book is to keep commanding your dog to sit or stay down. This will only work if you have trained him to do that. You should select a certain spot where the dog should be sitting whenever you have visitors.

The way to practice this style is by having someone you know go out of the door and start knocking. Once the knocking has started, command the dog to go to that spot and wait seated. Most of the time, the dog will shun your instructions and not listen to you but after a while he will be able to remember your command with a little guidance.
