Natural Remedies to Rid Your Dog of Ticks and Fleas

By Crystal Powers

Ticks and fleas are an annoyance for your dog and for you, not to mention they can cause health problems. It's easy to find many powders and sprays, but their chemical formulas make them sometimes unsafe for you and for your dog.

But, you will be happy to know there are safe ways you can get rid of these annoying parasites. Natural remedies are safe and effective.

Check out your local pet store. They offer many different products for your dog in regards to flea and tick care that are made from all natural ingredients. Even if they don't contain any chemicals, they have ingredients that can safely get rid of ticks and fleas.

They have powders and sprays with no harmful chemicals. Or, you can use special shampoos and brushes to remove them from your pet. Some treatments can be directly applied to the skin, and they are perfectly safe for your dog.

Flea collars are also a popular choice, since they repel pests and don't deliver any harmful chemicals on the skin.

Keep your dog and your home clean. Bathe and brush your dog's coat routinely, at least once a week. Vacuum the carpets in your home and keep the pet's bedding clean as much as possible.

Fleas love warm, humid areas, so you should take extra care to vacuum those. It's a good idea to sprinkle Borax or a little laundry detergent on the carpets a few minutes before vacuuming.

This kills the fleas and their eggs, so you can vacuum them up and be rid of them. Keep your children and pets away when you do this. While they should not be harmful, it's always best to be safe than sorry.

Some pet owners claim that homemade treatments are effective. You should ask your veterinarian before you use any of these.

Garlic and Brewer's yeast seem to be effective. Be careful when you use them. Keep your grass cut and your bushes edged, so that it will be more difficult for fleas to get on your dog.

With some of these tips, you can avoid using chemical treatments that could be harmful to your dog. And also, if you use environmentally safe products, you and your dog will enjoy a healthier life.
