Von Willebrand Disease 101

By Krizia Marie

Von Willebrand Disease is due to the lack of the Von Willebrand Factor. Your pet dog is not as different as you in terms of their body composition. However, one of the main differences in the external front is that you have two legs and your pet dog has four that is the only main difference. And so, in terms of the diseases that you are prone to, your pet dog is prone to it as well.

When a dog's body or your body experiences trauma, it is the Willebrand Factor that basically helps in the clotting process and in making sure that the body will be able to function well and save time when it comes to healing. However, when your body or your dog's body lacks the Factor, the body cannot always heal when it experiences trauma or any kind of injury.

In a sense, it is very important that you, as owner, are aware of this fact as it does not always show in dog breeds. This disease can pretty much affect the dog breeds coming from the Pinscher breeds, all sizes of the Poodles, terriers, and some of the retrievers. Hence, if you have one of these small dog breeds, you better know what this disease can do and what it cannot do when it is absent.

On a final note, if you own one of the dog breeds mentioned above you should know that there are signs that you should watch out for, memorize them and keep them in mind.

However, if the signs fit and the diagnosis has shown that your dog breed has this disease, there is still nothing that you can do to help your dog breed. Not even the advancement of modern medicine has discovered any possible treatment for the lack of the Willebrand Factor. Hence if you are an owner of a dog diagnosed with such a disease, the most that you can do to your dog breed is to make sure that it does not always experience trauma or any kind of injury for that matter as this disease will eat up the rest of your time with your dog.
