The Beast from the East-Bully Kutta

By Jerry Welsh

Bully Kutta is a name of a dog breed that commands fear. It would not be surprising if a lot of people would fear a Bully Kutta given the fact that the massive size as well as the apparent ferociousness would already be intimidating. The Bully Kutta belongs to the rare group of dog breeds but it has gained recognition because of its ferociousness. Some of these dogs have even attacked their owners.

The Bully Kutta has existed since antiquity. Legend has it that this breed came along with the army of Xerxes the First when he marched to Greece in 486 - 465 BC. The Persian army have used these massive and ferocious dogs in guarding their camps and the prisoners of war. The Bully Kutta name was derived from the words kutta which means dog and bohli a Hindi word which means heavily wrinkled as this rare dog breed has a heavily wrinkled face. The Bully Kutta is a powerful mastiff. A Bully Kutta is a muscular and strong boned breed with wide chest and long legs. The massive body, the large heavily wrinkled head with its powerful jaws gives this dog breed an intimidating appearance.

The aggressive and ferocious nature has earned this breed of mastiff the title "The Beast from the East". The breed actually developed from the Thanjavur and Tiruchi districts of India thus it is as well referred to as Indian Mastiff. Although the Bully Kutta was developed in India, the breed is more prevalent in Pakistan than in India thus it was given the name Pakistani Bulldog and Pakistani Mastiff.

Due to the ferocious nature, the Bully Kutta was favored by royalty to hunt large game until such time when methods of hunting was changed and dogs were replaced with cheetahs. Dog fighting enthusiasts found another "toy" - the Bully Kutta. These dogs were trained to be dog fighters.

In spite of the legendary ferocious temperament, Bully Kutta has a laid back personality. Puppies may be very active and boisterous but as it gets older, it would manifest a calm personality. These dogs make ideal guard and protection dogs but because of the inherent aggressive temperament, it would not do well as a home companion. However, to a dog experienced owner that knows how to handle dogs with this kind of temperament, a Bully Kutta would be loyal and very protective pet that would lay its life on the line to safeguard the well being of the family.
