How to become Top Dog - A Dog Owners Guide to Sanity

By Jade Davidson

If your dog pees on the carpet, knocks you down, or steals your food, these aren't good indicator that the dog is a follower. It is more likely acting as the leader, and you, its follower. The only way to reverse this is for you to act as the top dog, in accordance to their hierarchical system - the leader.

You want your dog to respect you and obey you. Don't confuse the two. A dog may obey you out of fear, but not respect you. That is a dangerous situation to be in. Most dogs are receptive to attitudes that are as basic and primal as fighting, but are much less violent.

For example, simply giving commands and being consistent goes a long way. If your dog is always made aware of what is and what is not acceptable, you will have a greater chance of success.

If and when a dog should bite you, and you have had this dog and don't believe him to be wild or sick, then you have to take action to ensure he knows that it will not be accepted. (If there is any indication of disorientation of your dog at this time, call a vet. Dogs can bite if they are sick, hurt or scared. You should seek professional advice.)

When you are training your dog, do not scold or hit the dog. You can try to grab his head firmly and calmly, never in rage, and then bite him in the ear. Don't really hurt him, just do what the other top dogs do. This will make him understand that you are the leader.

Get a leash to train your dog to follow you around while you are walking outside. The leash must be at your heel level. You are further letting him feel that you are the master and they should follow you at all times.

You can always get more help if you feel that you aren't well equipped with knowledge. There are many available dog training techniques. If these fail, you can always have your dog enrolled to a dog obedience school.
