Puppy Owners, Know Your Responsibilities

By Nicole Wright

Because you bought a puppy, you must assume full responsibility for it. You must act like its parent, protector, teacher, master, and most of all, a loving companion. You must be caring, yet stern at times. You should be a leader too who will educate the puppy to become a good canine citizen who will behave properly at all times.

Even if you are unable to have your dog work with an experienced trainer, teaching your puppy to "Sit!," "Come!," "Stay!," and "Lie down!" are all well within the average owner's capabilities. Combined with frequent outings to assure proper socialization, appropriate at-home training turns your mischievous little pup into the dog that other dog owners wish for.

Here are some helpful tips

Remember that when you are teaching your dog an important lesson like not relieving itself inside the house and not destroying the furnitures, not biting the pillows, etc...to never ever hit them as much as possible. You may pick them up and isolate them for them to understand that it is not correct to do that again.

it is very simple to teach your puppy and to complete a lesson a day. it is as short as your office coffee break. Just have 5 to 10 minutes of quality time wherein you have captured the attention of your puppy.

If you like, you can take your puppy wherever you are at home by buying a leash and trying it to your belt so that the puppy can always follow you. That way, you can supervise it and it will know which household items can and cannot be touched by him.

Being consistent is vital. You should be teaching the same thing one at a time. This is also the same rule that must apply to every other household member, all of you must agree to a certain learning concept an no one should do negative reinforcements such as yelling and hitting.

If the puppy has been able to repeat a certain command more than 10 times, then it is high time to move on to other commands. Don't stick with just one or two commands. Your puppy is capable of doing so much more. You need to maximize his potential.
