Allergies That Can Affect Dogs

If you believe your dog may be suffering from a
food allergy, we have listed some common types.
Please note that you should see a vet if
symptoms persist and they will be able to
correctly diagnose the problem and be able to
recommend a remedy. Allergies can vary, just as
in humans.

Itching is probably the most common symptom of
all when it comes to various dog-related
allergies such as skin allergies, food allergies
and flea-bite allergies. When people's dogs have
any of these allergies, they will often bite,
chew, lick or gnaw at various areas of their
bodies.

In many cases, where the dog bites can help
owners or veterinarians determine if the dogs
are suffering from food allergies or skin
allergies. The most common areas of the body
where dogs will itch, when suffering from
allergies, include their paws, their abdomens,
their faces, their hindquarters, their ears and
their groins.

When dogs are suffering from flea allergies,
they tend to scratch their hindquarters and
their backs intensely. Dogs with contact
allergies will typically scratch those areas
that have less fur on them such as the abdomen
or the arm-pits. When dogs have atopic
allergies, they will usually scratch at their
chest, face or feet.

In many cases of allergies in dogs, the dogs
will chew on their paws. The owners will notice
that the paws appear a reddish-brown colour;
and, in extremes cases, they may be raw or even
bloody.

Sneezing is probably the most common symptom of
atopic, or inhalant-related, allergies in dogs.
However, in a small amount of dogs it can be a
symptom of contact allergies. In many cases,
sneezing will often be accompanied by a clear
discharge of the nose or eyes.

Finally, although diarrhoea can be a symptom of
a vast array of illnesses in canines, it is one
of the most common symptoms of a food allergy.
If dog owners think that their dogs may be
experiencing a food allergy, they should try
switching them to a bland pet food to see if the
diarrhoea will disappear. If it does not, they
should have their veterinarian examine the dog.
Other symptoms of food allergies in dogs are
scratching, hair loss, fatigue and lethargy.

In conclusion, allergy symptoms in dogs can
vary widely depending on the allergy that dogs
may have. There are many allergies that dogs can
suffer from including dog food allergies, flea
allergies and skin allergies. Common symptoms of
allergies in dogs include scratching, sneezing
and diarrhoea. When people recognize these
symptoms, they can often determine whether their
dogs have allergies and seek the proper treatment
for them.
