For thousands of years, man have used dogs in many ways. Majority of dog owners keep the dog as pets because these are very loyal and affectionate animals. The behavior and the appearance of the dog is an indication of the care the pet receives from the owner. Simply put, a responsible and caring owner takes the time to provide the pet with the best care and attention to ensure its health and impressive appearance. Ensuring that the pet receives its basic needs would not be enough as the dog would still need to be socialized, obedience trained and disciplined.
Dogs are commonly treated as family members. Oftentimes, the pet dog will be treated as the baby of the family thus attention and love will be focused on the pet. With its lively and playful personality, a pet dog will be a kind of living toy that will be the ideal companion of the kids. The affection to the pet usually gives rise to unwanted behaviors when family allows the pet have its way. This would give rise to the situation where the dog will now own the humans instead of the other way around.
Incessant barking, filching food, raiding trash cans, inappropriate chewing and jumping at people are only some of the bad habits of dogs. Dogs are not like humans thus they should not be expected to know what is right and what is wrong. Along with providing the basic needs of the dogs, an owner should also take time to discipline the pet.
The dog may be too effusive with its affection or too aggressive thus it would have to be disciplined. Discipline will make the dog a good canine citizen but how will you undertake this task? You know that disciplining the pet is necessary but would you inflict physical punishment or would you persuade the dog to accept you as the leader of the pack with toys and treats?
Physical punishment may not be effective as even though dogs are intelligent animals they may not be aware why they are being punished. Something that will be remembered by the dog like a spray of ice cold water or the rattling of coins in a tin can would be a more effective tool to discipline the dog. The sound of rattling coins in the tin can or the feel of the cold water on the dog's face every time the dog is on one of its unwanted habits like jumping on people or tormenting cat would eventually make the pet think twice about doing the unwanted habit again. These simple methods of discipline would be more effective than physical punishment.
