English White Terrier a.k.a. Old English Terrier

By Jerry Welsh

Terriers, also known as earth dogs have existed in Great Britain as early as the 18th century. The dogs were generally called terriers or earth dogs. These small dogs have existed for years without being formally categorized into distinct breeds. The dogs were only categorized according to appearance and place of origin.

About the middle of the 1800s, the popularity of dogs shows made a significant change in the existence of these dogs. Dog owners have started creating "new breeds" from the existing dog types. The new breeds were introduced complete with fictitious histories to attract the attention of dog lovers. A terrier type that is already in existence was given the name English White Terrier and introduced as a new breed.

The English White Terrier is a dog breed that weighs from 12 lbs to 20 lbs. The smooth white coat, the flat skull on the wedge shaped head as well as the muzzle that tapers to the black nose distinguishes this terrier from other breeds of terriers. Set fairly close together are black oval shaped eyes. It has been the custom of English White Terrier owners to crop the perfectly erect ears of the dog. Tail that is of moderate length has a thick base and tapers to a point.

Dog lovers were robbed of the chance to know the English White Terrier as this breed that is also known as Old English Terriers has completely slipped into extinction. Terriers are generally called earth dogs because of their propensity to follow the prey underground. These dexterous dogs will go after foxes, vermin and other small animals to their underground den. Because of the rather fragile and delicate constitution, the English White Terrier was never utilized as a working breed. This breed did not become a sports enthusiast's companion. This breed though has excelled in the show ring.

An English White Terrier has the propensity for partial and total deafness thus they never make good hunters and working dogs. These dogs however, are known to be good lap dogs. These are affectionate dogs that would love to be hugged and cuddled. The genetic disorder as well as the lack of utilization has caused the extinction of this breed. The English White Terrier is one of the breeds that have gone extinct but this breed has left dog lovers an important legacy. A number of present day terrier breeds have descended from the English White Terrier. The English White Terrier has completely vanished but the Fox Terrier, the Parson Russell Terrier, the Jack Russell Terrier, and the Sealyham Terriers are believed to have developed from this white coated ancient terrier breed.
